  1. Gotta love the Library.

Download is 8Mbps or greater but the upload!!!

Anyway, I was also downloading a video from the college website that was 60MB. As soon as I clicked to save it, the bar filled to the top in about 5 seconds. I thought something had gone wrong. Then I noticed the average transfer speed of 10MB/s (80,000Kbps.) I was suprised, until I realized that the file was probably hosted in that building and I was downloading over the building's network. Still pretty cool though.

  2. I go to University of Kentucky. What really sucks is that the new dorms they just built have amenities like 10mpbs internet, and AIR CONDITIONING!! lol, they never fix the old dorms. But my apartment this year has even slower internet, but now at least we can do something about it.

  3. sorry, I was mistaken in the first post. We don't have a T3, most apartments around here do, but we have 2 T1 lines. That is like sharing your cable connection with the whole neighborhood. And ya, I was refering to Kbps (not KB) when I said we got 150. I mean I have to download software for my computer science class that is over 600MB, that is like 3 days right there. It is so slow that we constantly get pages that time out. I wasn't expecting too much from the apartment internet, but they didn't tell us any of this beforehand. This isn't even enough to get our classwork done, much less anything else. I did pay a fee for the internet, but it was a sum of all utilities so I am not sure how much. We are probably going to be getting our own cable bb service, so hopefully I won't have to put up with this much longer. :(

  4. So I moved into my apartment for college, and I learn that the entire complex of about 120 rooms of 4 people each shares a single T3 line and 1 router. The average download speed is around 150kbps, the upload is around 300kbps. And the worst part??? We have a "fair use bandwidth limit," each computer can only have so much bandwidth either way every 24 hours on a rolling basis. The "fair" amount of bandwidth is set at 250MB. If you go over that, your connection is cut in like 1/4 of the already slow speed until you go back under it again. What a joke!

  5. Hi again. If anyone remembers my last thread, I gave up with that computer. I am now on my personal PC which has never had problems with the tests. Sometime over the past week the connection took a hit, we have been running at like 70% download all week. But the real question is about the upload. When I choose the upload smartscan it load the 97k one and that takes a while then it brings a screen that says the upload is ~180 Kbps (22 KB/S). It I just run a medium or large sized scan from the beginning I get a report that is like 300+ Kbps, which is around what we should be getting. This is the comp that has never had problems and I havn't done anything software or installing wise in the last month or so. TIA

  6. Ya, I thought it was cached. But it has done this for a few days, even on the very first run. Continues through various restarts and cache clearings. I am going to try to do it in safe-mode with networking and see if it still acts up.

  7. :::.. Download Stats ..:::

    ^ I'm thinking not.

This is my family's computer so I have no idea what they have done to it. I have tried clearing the internet cache, but I keep getting this. The computer is a lot slower than it used to be on the internet. There is another computer on the network that works fine and reports the speed as normal. If anyone has any ideas they are appricated. TIA!

  8. I swear I tried the search. I tried a bunch of combos but I kept getting results talking about various types of hardware and a display monitor. The only things I could find that were even relevant were about some programs that monitored bandwidth and routers. I never seem to find things through searching, I always pick the wrong keywords. thanks for the tip on MBM, I will give it a shot.

  9. Hi all, a little while ago I saw a thread in here (I think it was in here) about programs you can use to monitor hardware information. I am currently looking for one, and I can't find that old thread. If anyone remembers it or has a recommended monitoring program, let me know. I have a custom computer that I want to monitor fan (connected to mobo) and temperature stats. TIA!

  10. yeah, I ran a ping with 20 cycles, and most numbers were around 40-50 but there were some every once in a while that went over 100. I figure I just have a very unstable connection like you guys said. I am on IM alot and it drops and has to reconnect. My router is built into the modem. One thing I noticed was that the router/modem is only connected at 10mbps. It is a pretty old piece of hardware, but I really don't have a choice. Do you think the router/modem could be bad and cause the spikes? Thanks for your help!

  11. Thanks for you help so far. I have tried to change the MTU through the registry and with tweak programs but it always reverts back to 1420. I tried to cycle the modem and I will try to swap the cable in the next few days or so. I have an on-board LAN port, but it and the cable seems in good shape. I tried the cablenuts settings, and it seems to be about the same so far, but I will keep fiddling with it.

  12. I had a post a while back about my internet being very slow compared to what was advertised. I am technically supposed to have 4000/1000 cable, but I get about 800/140 (max, usually lower). I called the ISP and they sent someone out and he was happy to get me to the 700-1000 range (it was even lower before.) I have noticed that my speed tends to be running fine for a while then bottom out HARD. Like in my FTP program I have a bandwidth monitor, and my file download would run aroun 100 kbps for a while then fall to 0 and rise back. When running a test here, the little progress bar animation will shoot out and go to maybe 40% then freeze, then shoot to 80%, freeze, and then complete. I have run the tests on other computers and they tend to display the bar at constant speed, etc. I am thinking I would have some decent internet speed if I could calm it down a little. One thing of interest I have found is that my ISP has the MTU set at 1420. Has anyone ever heard of this before, or know something I could try.

    Thanks for your help

  13. if you are just looking to share files there is a nice little program I found somewhere that I have been using. Basically all it is is the "send file" feature in AIM, without a bandwidth cap (or ads for that matter.) It is called Look@file, you can find a download searching for that on google. It is kinda hard to get working at first, but once you do it once or twice you will know how it works. Comes with an informative, if example lacking help file. It lets you send files or folders. My friend shot me a little over a GB of data in a few hours using this program, not too bad for a peer-to-peer connection.

  14. weird... when I tried to tweak the settings in the cablenuts program it started causing me to drop packets between me and the router. It was dropping about 15~20% up from 1-2% normally. The packet dropping, I assume, then hindered my speed on the tests. I am going to field a guess that it is not my settings that are the major problem here, but some piece of equipment between me and the internet somewhere or maybe the ISP's configuration. I am gonna give them a call and ask them to check it out. The last time they were here though they just fooled with settings and crap on my computer so fast I couldn't tell what they were doing and it was making me nervous :? , so I am a little hesitant to have them come back. Thanks for all your help!

  15. so it doesn't matter about the MTU? Does the cablenuts program change that? I think that there must be something wrong with the cable right now because I am getting some very strange activity. Pages will just randomly stop loading sometimes and I have to refresh them, its also running extremely slow, worse than usual. I tried the cablenuts program and it didn't seem to make a difference than the default settings.

As a side note, what is an acceptable packet loss rate for a router?

    Thanks for all your help.

  16. Hmm, having a little trouble. I was following the instructions for the CableNuts program and I ran into a snag. My MTU setting is 1420, thus my MSS setting is 1380, which is not even on the list of optimized configurations. I tried searching the internet, and I even found instructions from microsoft about how to change the MTU value, but none of them worked. I can't get it to change from 1420. I have Windows XP Pro by the way. Does anyone know the best way to change the MTU setting?

  17. Thanks for the welcome. I am gonna try that program and see what I can get. Swimmer, man I wish I got anything close to what you get, your speed is awesome! :D Anyway, I know some stuff about computer hardware, and some basic networking, so hopefully I can contribute some too!

  18. I recently moved off to college and am having some issues with the internet here. At home, we have had cable for as long as I can remember, and it rocked. We get about 2.5 mbps on average. When I first hooked my computer up here I was getting about the equivilent of a 56k modem. I called the tech guys and they came and pinged the crap out of every site on the internet for some reason and called a tech from the ISP. He came over and replaced a worn wall jack (which fixed the packet dropping) and replaced the router (why??? don't know), but he was still suprised that he couldn't get my speed results very high. I currently average about 400-800 kbps depending on the time of day. The way our school internet is set up is weird, each room has its own cable router. I know that like 20,000 people are sharing this connection, but I am thinking that is a bit slow, it is extremely noticable compared to my home connection. I guess I am just wondering what other people in college are getting, and if I should keep bothering the tech guys (they don't seem to care anymore because at least I have some internet.)
