  1. There are but two gods of the internet. Google included.  :-P  (yeah right. they have both been wrong plenty)

I was cursing the Internet Gods the other day.

One of the local nodes for the DSL barbecued itself and we was without Internet for abouts 36 hours.

And until the traffic for the business lines was rerouted to the good node, various debit machines and bank machines in town were out of order. A couple of places had "cash only" signs up..... Whats "Cash"?  :undecided:

But it was fun to stare at the blinking lights on the DSL modem and figure out that two blinks meant trying to connect to the node. And three blinks meant connecting to the node, but no channel. And no blinks meant no DSL signal coming down the lines.  :buck2:

But thats still over a year without any problems on the DSL. Try that on cable....

  2. I noticed in Device Manager when I clicked on View>Show Hidden Devices

under Network adapters all of a sudden instead of ONLY having the Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection

7 MORE ADAPTERS APPEAR (and they only appear when I click on show Hidden Devices.  Plus they are not greyed out.

I have a picture of them attached in word.

    The additional adapters are:

    Direct Parallel

    RAS Async Adapter

    WAN Miniport (IP)

Wan Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport

    Wan Miniport (L2TP)

    WAN Miniport (PPPOE)

    Wan Miniport (PPTP)

And thats why they are hidden. Lots of that stuff in there. Keeps people from screwing things up. There is an old scare email on the Web called the Teddy Bear virus. It's fake, but in the file system somewhere is a teddy bear icon. The email says to delete it. not a priority file, but...............

  3. I am still coming up with this 173.54.255.163 as my IP address.

I am a standalone PC.  No Network.  How can I see if I am configured as a Network...?

I have almost exhausted every idea....but I know that there is an answer there...

You could change your machines MAC address to see if that will release it. Otherwise.....................

Motherboard Status,,, properties,,,,, Configure (your Ethernet adapter),,,, advanced,, Network address,, Then enter a new MAC address. That usually will release/renew a IP address from the system. Even changing one digit in your current MAC will cause the change. And a reboot everything, computer, modem, router, etc (If I remember correctly, since it's been awhile since I last changed mine).

    According to one of your posts, your MAC is.... Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0C-F1-E9-44-51   At the moment.

And have you also tried uninstalling/deleting the Adapter and then making a new connection? Then you should get all the defaults back. Right click disable, then right click and delete. Then use the wizard to setup a new connection on the adapter.

  4. I don't have "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" chosen.  That's all empty.

I have "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" chosen.

Should I check on the "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix"?

These are my settings that I have not changed after a Operating System reinstall from about two months ago using DSL.

My gateway is my router. And my IP is an internal IP.

  5. I found this below.

A generic to one ISP(so a reset as per instructions should hopefully fix your connection problem without the "sa.bigpond.net.au")..   For your Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:. Since it appears to be pointing to nowhere(Home).

Mine does not have "append these DNS suffixes in order" checked. I'm using OpenDNS .

What you are looking at is the DNS suffix that is being appended to the end of hostnames in an attempt to resolve it.

If you want it to show the correct details in there, change "Lan" to "sa.bigpond.net.au"

Then go into the TCP/IP properties and make sure that there is nothing in the "append these DNS suffixes (in order)" field.

Unsure how to do that? Follow this.

Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP > Properties > Advanced button > DNS Tab. In the box that says append these DNS suffixes (in order), remove the listed items in there. Click OK, OK then Close.

Open up cmd and type ipconfig/release then hit enter and type ipconfig/renew and hit enter again. Once that is done, sa.bigpond.net.au should show up in the DNS suffix search list.

    Heres mine....

Tuesday I am getting a new DSL 'modem' only(Not a Modem/Router combo like right now)  and then I have a stand alone router to hook up to it.

  6. From what I've read, is Hughesnet is 'Encouraging' users on the older modems to 'upgrade' via heavy throttling(in a kind of random looking way). And also moving those users on to less beams that are more crowded. Eventually most of all the KU band home users will have to pay big bucks to upgrade to the Spaceway3 KA band platform(HN9000). But some are getting an upgrade to the HN9000 for cheap(all new equipment).

  7. Check in your services panal for this being shut off to Manual. Even though it says it goes back to normal on the un-install. Could be a couple of other things in there may have got changed to manual. As long as there is also no added Proxy from somewhere enabled as well.

    http://ntcanuck.com/faq.htm#a-tw_alters

What Services does TreeWalk alter? The setup program changed your local DNS Client/Cache Service to Manual Startup mode, so if the Service was enabled, it will not be started after the reboot. This is done due to the fact that most programs will work better with the local TreeWalk if such a service is not active. (More "Which Services does TreeWalk affect...")

Paste the following command into a "Run" box to change the setting only if absolutely necessary:

    %systemroot%system32services.msc /s

Upon uninstalling TreeWalk DNS that setting is returned to what it previously was anyway, and all original DNS server settings will also be restored to what they were.

  8. I really need help here.  Something has happened with Treewalk dns that has changed my ip address and I can't correct. :txt-wtf:  HELP!!!!!

Try this if your Hosts file is stuck or corrupted.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=138700

or this link for it as well

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html

You can reset hosts file to Windows default.

I have never tried it . So the usual try at your own risk.

Or see if your Adapter settings have been set to something else and need to be cleared.

  9. I have a 650VA UPS. It is 'sufficient' for my use. As in a 550VA is the lowest you would want to go with(bottom of the barrel). Allows for the system to wake up from standby to shut it down If you have an old CRT(tube) monitor(monitor takes a large amount of juice to power up).

The estimated runtime is just that as well... A bit long estimated.

But I mainly use it for brownouts or power glitches in places I have lived. I even have my DSL modem plugged in to the UPS side. But I also have only one system on it. "Computer. Monitor. DSL modem, on the UPS side"

I don't use any of the automatic shut down software. But the software is handy to stop the alarm beeper for when the power goes out to this model(APC). But on standby, the UPS will last a long while.

  10. Move your head closer to the screen right in the valley there and it will seem like they are both moving. Dang it . use your imagination.

My neck and shoulders are already hurting from early today. Don't need my eyes bugging out too.   Besides with the 22" wide screen, I could suffer major damage to my eyes that close up... Left or right ??? Both look yummy.

And a stiff neck, for some strange reason, from walking....... My age? 30 to 60. Depending on how I wake up in the morning...  :wink2:

  11. SQuit talking like that!! you got my hands excited.

See what you made him go and do?? his screen is mesmerizing him . he will see them for days after in a trancelike state drooling from the mouth. they will think he had a stroke.

I'm just wondering on how to make both of them move at the same time. You can't play with one and leave the other just hanging there. Thats not fair at all.

  12. So that's where that came from . the screen cleaners. from behind the screen , right. big hooters??

    I Googled...

    screen cleaner big hooters

... And that site is apparently dead for the screen cleaner.....  :icon_pale:

  13. Boy do I miss the members lounge. In there it would have flown.  Had some hot cocktail waitress' too.

Well you could always get a widget that floats a pair across the screen all day and night long....

  14. Since Xplornet is a re-seller of Hughesnet....... But Xplornet should have it's own Canadian SpaceWay3 NOC online by now...

    http://go.gethughesnet.com/speed.cfm

With the ElitePlus plan, connect to the Internet with maximum download speeds of up to 3.0 Mbps, with typical speeds about 1.6 Mbps to 1.8 Mbps during peak times. Upload speeds, which are capable of reaching 300 Kbps, are typically 165 Kbps to 180 Kbps during peak hours.

Uploads on satellite are kept as low as possible to allow for more 'download bandwidth'.

  15. Stay with the Hughesnet SpaceWay3 KA. At least you have a 3 year window before any major slowdowns. No one really recommends satellite, but Spaceway3 is the better of the choice right now. Until ViaSat 1 gets launched sometime in or after 2011......

Never even think about WildBlue at this time  :idiot2: , due to having many, many customers on the satellites. The Primetime slowdown on some beams is criminal.  :knuppel2:

Use the FAP free period overnight for your big downloads. Your daily limit does not count during that time. It's the good part about Hughesnet. So your monthly total can be higher than the daily calculation...  And I guess you are also under a two year contract as well(30 day satisfaction policy that WildPoo does not have)..Right?

  16. With the map of 'spot beams'. It will come in handy when Hughesnet gets that satellite to capacity of abouts one million users. In about two to three years(or maybe 4). Support should be able to tell you what is your beam and NOC. I think it was Aug 2008, that the Spaceway3 went live to home customers..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spot_beam

As with WildBlue(U.S.) and Xplornet(Canada), at this time, some beams are over-subscribed on their respective satellites... Meaning slow 'Primetime' speeds(as in 5pm to 10pm). And call support agents who blame the user for slow surfing speeds, when it's the systems problem.

A NOC(network operations center), is where the satellite connects to the Earth and the Internet. There can be 5 or more NOC's for one satellite. A basic tracert can sometimes show the location of your NOC... NOC's Can also have bandwidth limitations(as in not upgraded for bandwidth requirements) resulting in slowdowns. Weather can be a factor in speeds when there is a major storm over a NOC and it is sunny in your location Or a major storm over you... But the Hughesnet spaceway3 is pretty good in rough weather according to reviews.

I think some people set Torrents at a slow speed and sometimes kill the upload sharing portion.

Sometimes the modem can get stuck at the slow speed and you have to reboot it to bring the speed back up.. It is part of 'traffic shaping'. as the satellite providers prefer only webpage surfing and email, as opposed to high bandwidth using applications.

    ISP.... Internet Service Provider.

    DSL..... Damn Speedy Line.

Hughesnet should have usage page. Don't know if it works with the spaceway3. And it may be 2 hours delayed in readings.

    http://customercare.myhughesnet.com/

On the right hand side under "Self Help" select "Tools"

    Now select "Check Usage"

    Now Select your modem "XXxxxx"

    Enter your SAN number:

  17. Hughesnet FAP policy page.

    http://go.gethughesnet.com/fapolicy.cfm?hf=0

    Hughsnet expected speeds on Spaceway3..

    http://go.gethughesnet.com/speed.cfm

No FAP between 3am to 6am eastern time. Even though in some cases, it is now(new) from 2am to 7am eastern time.

Spaceway3 beam map attached. Since you say you are on the HN9000 modem Ka band.

You may be getting 'soft' FAPped if you are getting noticeably throttled with continuous torrents running.  And if you get FAPped For going over the daily limit, you will  have your speeds dropped to sub dialup speed for 24 hours, which means only doing text based emails.

  18. I am wondering if there is a conflict between AVG and AdAware? Been known to happen. CPU spikes up to 100% and slows things down.  Try Safe mode with networking and try the websites. Or ditch AVG and try Avast.. http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

To get to safe mode, Reboot, and while it reboots, tap F8 repeatedly and choose 'Safe Mode, with Networking'. Depending on how your system gets to safe mode..

I ditched AdAware for the 2007 version, due to it 'not' accepting to 'NOT' put a icon in the system tray. And mine seems to be corrupted at the moment, to check it's settings..And it launches after a third try...Argggggggg...

Oh sure and a new version of spybot to update/download as well....1.6.2

It's a pain when you can't just play with a system in person.

Time to get offline...... I have donuts waiting to be eaten.....

  19. I'd remove or uninstall.....

    R1 - HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain,Default_Page_URL = http://www. dell4me .com /myway

MyWay Can be considered a hijacker of the IE browser(and others). I think ASK.com is the owner. And ASK.com is pizzing off a lot of people off this past year.

I'd also go in to Internet Explorers ActiveX section to look for controls that are not needed..

IE, Tools, internet options, settings, view objects, and then right click on the name to find out what each one is for.
