  1. Well, since dumping Hughes, I have been searching for a wireless broadband card.

AT&T doesn't have any coverage here (at least not 3G, its the EDGE network which is no faster than dialup (but still wireless).

    Sprint has NO coverage here.

VOILA! Verizon surprisingly had "BLUE" on all of its map for the entire town where I live.  3G.

If the signal is not good enough for Broadband (EVDO, REVISION A), then you get switched to "National Access" which is alot slower 100-200K.

AMAZINGLY, after tweaking some settings in the modem, I am staying on the EVDO A band (after staying on the "national" for a day after installed on my desktop".  I'm running about 1mbps consistently with 4 bars on the signal (inside the house).

SO, if you are considering mobile broadband, go to each site you're interested in, and pull up their coverage maps,

key in your EXACT address, then see what kind of coverage (if any) you are likely to receive.

AS ALWAYS, SPEEDS ARE NOT GUARANTEED!

  2. Comes and goes. but that's all based off signal quality.

You can get into the Diag screens on a UM175 modem by pressing "CRTL-D"

    the password is "diagvzw".

you can see detailed information on signal strength, etc.  I've read other tweaks in forums, and tried a few, that actually did work (including modifying the modem setting directly).

    Download :: 849 Kbps or 0.85 Mbps (104 kB/s)

  3. Looking better and better.  Requires alot of tweaking with the antenna, and find the optimum place.

    Getting 4 bars so far!

  4. youre antenna is in the basement?????  I would have figured the higher the better?

I did see some gain antennas online.

Strange though, when I use it on my notebook pc, I get Broadband Rev a.

if I set it up on my desktop, I get "National Access" which is about 133K.

    too weird.

When I left bestBuy, I had a 4 bar signal, and speed was about 1.3mbps.

Now,i'm at home 40 miles away, I get about 512Kbps download.

Know anything about this 5gb cap?  I read people have been terminated for going over it . . ..

Yes, broadband on demand on your laptop[ is pretty neat, but damn if I could type on a laptop all day! (never used that backspace so much!  :2funny: :2funny:

  5. OK, dumped hughesnet....

Now trying this Verizon broadband usb adapter.  its the UM175.  I think its a wireless modem.

is this what some of you have?  I noticed it said EVDO, revision A.

i'm getting about 3 bars out of 4. but because of where I'm at.  I top out at about 512Kbps.

There were several "towers" where I could "dial-in" at (or connect).

Would another tower in the same range distance make me get a better connection?

I have a TON of questions about this........Anyone else have this wireless broadband plan using the UM175 usb adapter?

  6. Well, if you've been following my HUGHESNET saga, you wont have to read any longer.

The long saga has ended.  Yes, The Corporate office Terminated my account today.  Goodbye Hughes!

They stated they were not willing to go through a long series of diagnosis or send a technician out and troubleshoot.

No termination charges, Account to ZERO!

Suits me. I didn't any high hopes that any of it would get any better!  But it goes to show if you complain enough,

state your point, stand firm, and dont let them run you over, you'll win!

So, if you have anyone considering Hughes, I suggest you say NO, and have them read some of the comments here.

By the way, the "secret" number to Tier-4 Support in Florida is 1-866-859-2275 (of course your case has to have had previous issues.....

So, thanks to all that have read my posts!  I guess I'll be on dialup for a while until I research the cell phone carriers wireless data plans!

  8. Today's phone call with Hughesnet Tier-4 support basically didn't yeild any explanations (which I didn't expect it to).

Run speed tests, run more speed tests, reboot pc, reboot modem, yada yada yada

The tech in Florida did agree with me in the fact that my speeds were not acceptable, but there had to be a diagnosis.

The erased the modem software and reloaded it (I could have done that in the control panel).

Seems to be "somewhat" better, but that could last for 1 hour, 1 day, or 30 minutes.  Nothing's consistent.

  9. You are EXACTLY RIGHT ! ! !

When using the connection you have, you have a pretty good idea of what speed you're running at.

And you're right, if a webpage I know should be loading fast doesn't come in at the blink of an eye, I know something's wrong.

    Thanks for the analogy!

A note on "knowing" your speeds, after a while using a fast connection regular, you do get the feel for it, I have tested here so much that I can honestly say that while watching the progress bar during the test, I can usually come within 500Mb before the test is complete.

When normally surfing, I can tell when there's an increase, pr decrease in my speed. I'm on TWC 15/7 which for what I do, and what I have here is great , other then the upload of course that whole thing is a scam if you ask me. The damn upload should match the download.

But either way, when a page doesn't simply appear in less then the blink of an eye, I know there's an issue. So all I'm saying is from where I sit, it is possible to know what your speed is after a while. I will attest to that.

Now I'm not on dsl, but I have been, and the connection was very stale and reliable.

  10. just checked. No coverage for where I live. (coverage area area was in Grey, not Orange).

Next option, please . . . :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

Did someone say rednecks and smartasses?   Anyway yes I use the USB U720 model sith sprint service. $59.95 presently. And for me way better than satelite. The upload is decent also.

I get up to 600, and no bouncing off of sats for internet. Cell phone waves.

  11. I might look into that...... I have an AT&T cell phone, and sometimes the signal isn't good here (rural area).

I dont have to get a Sprint phone, right?  I can just get their USB modem and sign up for their data service?

One more question.....What's the monthly CAP?    Its 12.5gb month for Hughes.

Did someone say rednecks and smartasses?   Anyway yes I use the USB U720 model sith sprint service. $59.95 presently. And for me way better than satelite. The upload is decent also.

  12. There are plenty of rednecks and smartasses on here, but we all just laugh, have fun, and get along! :-)

reminds me of an old quote..."cant we all just get along?" but no, i aint hatin on anyone, and i know you aint hatin on me, im just givin ya a hard time, its what i do best, im a smartass, always have been and always will be, some like it and others dont know how to take me, so again, my apologies bro.

  13. i'm not bashing you at all (see you're TYPING without thinking again).. . .  you can look up ANY members speed tests, they aren't private.

Not jealous of your speeds at all.  I'm happy for ya.  I had 12mbps Comcast in Nashville before I moved and changed to DSL..

Of course anything has to be better than what I get on Hughesnet!  :2funny: :2funny:

and why are you posting my stats? and no, my speeds are not all over the place, i was fooling around with cablenut and also doing some tests while running other apps in the background, like utorrent and such, and the results before the 18th of this month were from my previous internet provider, which was a crappy usb aircard, but now it stays steady at around 5Mbps. so, it seems to me that you are out to bash me, and i dont know thy, i told you i didnt mean any offense to you, i think youre just hatin on me cuz you cant reach 5Mbps, but oh well, i aint stressed about this thread. im only here for my own amusement.

  14. Actually, sinister 666, your speeds are all over the place . . . . well, $!*%, I can't highlight them all.

  15. Tommie, you never provided me with the details of EVDO.

Are you using a signal off your cell phone to act as a modem, have a USB connect card, or what?

I assume you're just capturing data in a wireless format such as a cell phone captures a signal??

    Do tell?  Price??

This one is pretty good for usual. Its EVDO. And has no speed really. Just up to 2 megs I believe, And I have never seen it really.

  18. Actually, I did live about 300 feet from the "central office/switch" as they call it.  The Switching station was on the end of a dead end road.  We had a back entrance at the rear of the apt complex which brought us out at a red light on a busy road. Passing by the station on the way out, I was literally within 10 feet of the door (fenced in of course). Obviously, the closer to the central office you live, the better speeds you get on DSL.  (i'll be happy to plot your the coordinates on a map if you dont believe me! )

    :2funny::grin::shocked::idiot2::uglystupid2:

I did not have to do speed tests all of the time because I was satisified with the speeds I was getting.  I knew what my

web surfin speed was like, and I knew how to translate file downloads into kbps/mbps.  So I didn't have to do a speed test

to know I was running 6mbps.

so, without running sped tests, how do you "just know" that you were always getting 6Mbps? im not trying to discredit what you are saying, but you cant "just know" that your internet is always performing at its peak, its not like driving a car where you can tell the difference between driving at 55mph and driving at 35mph....and maybe im just a lil bit compulsive with my daily speed tests here, but it gives me some form of gratification to see the numbers that im getting stay consistant from day to day. and whats the harm in stopping by this site for a quick minute every day to do a test that only takes about 15 seconds anyway? idk, maybe im just a nerd or a bit too compulsive, but i like to "actually" know, and not "just know" based on what i think. again, not calling you a lier, but if you had the 6Mbps connection and you were actually getting 6Mbps, then you must have been very special, or you were living inside the att routing station, cuz im right next door, less than 1000 ft of wire from my pc to their servers, and i dont hit 6Mbps and thats the plan i signed up for. and its my understanding that the further from the local routing station, the slower your speeds....so, again, not to call you a lier, but i dont believe it.

  19. I had AT*T DSL in Nashville after I dumped Comcast.

I had a 6mbps plan, and it was ALWAYS at 6mbps!  ( i didn't have to continually run speed tests on it because I knew it was performing as it should).

I moved to a rural area and got stuck with dial-up.  (currently fighting Hughesnet)...

  20. I've had extremely good luck out of the WESTERN DIGITAL MY BOOK series (Essential and Home).

These drives are quiet and spin down after a while after not accessing any data.

All the ones I have utilize the WD "GREEN" drives in them.

    I have a 500, 750, and 1TB.  I have 2 ESSENTIALS that have USB only.

the 750 is the :HOME: edition which includes USB, Firewire, and ESATA.

Deals all the time on these.  I have $109 for the 1TB edition at a local BESTBUY.

Check online. prices differ every week!

I have NEVER owned a  SEAGATE external drive.

  21. My original account was DSS800XXXX, That was back in December. and my site Id was 110XXX.

My second account is DSS825XXXX, and my site id is 210XXX.

Not being able to know how account and site id's increment, there is no way to know is that's the number of users that they signed

up in 5 months or now.

I will have to check my order and my Service Order # to see how that incremented.

I was wondering if my speeds would be any better getting a new install/account, and like I said before, Speeds were GREAT!!! the first 30.

Obviously they do this to EVERYONE.  And yep, TWICE to the same person, you can be assured its done to everyone.

    Yeah, double whammy!!!  :knuppel2: :knuppel2: :knuppel2::tickedoff: :tickedoff:

Tomorrow is Monday, and I guess ECC and tech support will get my "CANCELLATION REQUESTED" letter.

they will either cancel it on the fly (based on my experienced with William at ECC on the first account).

Or they will give me some blah blah crap about "try it for another month", and see if it gets better.

NOT. the longer I venture into that contract, the worse it will be to fight later..

or "we'll give you a month free"....That cost them NOTHING, and a sorry way to keep me on.

I'll report back tomorrow.  I stopped doing speed tests.  I'll just use it til they cut it off.

Calling bank tomorrow and disputing credit charges also!

    Hughes, YOU SUCK!

Until the third generation Internet satellites get launched,,, WildMoo in 2011 and Poosnet in 2012,,, This type of bait and switch is probably going to increase from just a few users to many more.

They do try to make it look random, but when one person has it happen twice? Thats a pounding.  :knuppel2:  Not all of the people are so sleepy to not notice when speeds suddenly change and never get back to what you had the first month.

The latest installed users statistics are something like Hughesnet and WildGoo 10,000 users each a month. And I bet beam capacity is based on 60% to 70% of users online at once.  And probably at 512Kbps package speeds as the basis.

I do wonder exactly how many people have left since the first round of 3 year contracts were up in mayish 2008( a year ago).

I have noticed posts stating the HN9000  users are now having problems getting to some sites, due to whatever crazy management software is at the NOC's. That has been a complaint for a long time with WildBlue. Seems their software does not like some domains or IP ranges. But Proxies still get through.

  22. Yeah, you can look at those speed tests and TARGET SPECIFICALLY when it went to sh**  :tickedoff:

They still deny there is anything wrong.  Talking to Tier-4 engineering on Monday.  I'm sure the result will be running

endless speed tests, and stating 'speeds are not guaranteed'.  No sense of battling with them. the way it is now

is most likely the way its gonna be!  :knuppel2:

   No I agree,  Wildblue isn't much better,  BUT my speed did not go to hell on the 32nd day.  I can always predict when my speeds will go down.  Peak hours M-F 3pm till 10:30pm +/-.   I know the contract if  is just paper.   I'm not under contract with anyone at this time.  I wanted to see what would happen with Hughesnet after the 30days trial,  it also goes to s#@t.  Something seemed to look too good with Hughesnet so I held back.   I wish we had DSL or 3G in my area, but there is none.   So I will stay where I am for now.  AT&T is doing work in my area and of course they won't tell ya whats going on.  So  I will just wait and see what comes 1st.    :-|

  23. I've actually did a search of EVDO, and I didn't find much on their sites.

Basically, is that where you use your cell phone as your "modem" or where you use a "wireless card" that intercepts a wireless data signal?

    I know AT&T has a card that you use.Its $60 for 5gb cap.  Wireless

    How about what you use?

    (1) price?

    (2) Average speed (in reality)

    (3) is there a gb "cap" per month?

If not already asked have you tried EVDO. Sprint, Verizon, etc...

It beats the heck out of Satelite.
