  1. Thanks to all for responding! Got DSL plus an upgrade to the phone service for $10 less per month than Hughes - and that includes renting the DSL modem. We bought the Hughes modem. Latest :::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 2502 Kbps about 2.5 Mbps (tested with 3064 kB) Download Speed is:: 305 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Main) Test Time:: 2010-04-30 19:35:19 GMT Bottom Line:: 44X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 3.36 sec Tested from a 3064 kB file and took 10.031 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: Awesome! 20% + : 117 % faster than the average for host (rittct.net) D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-FOD14RBMX User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; GTB6.4; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; MS-RTC EA 2; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729) [!] This is the slowest I've seen - day or night, peak or slack time. And there's no limit to amount I can download. We live about 6 blocks from the end of nowhere. If we can get this type of DSL performance. I would think almost anyone can. I can't see any need for Hughes.
  2. Just ran this - :::.. 3. Thanks for your response! You have probably diagnosed the problem. I can't imagine why nobody from Hughes mentioned it. (I have 8 case numbers!) I do have a 7000s. As everything in my system is new, it's obvious that the problem lies elsewhere. I had decided that the 7000s was being shoved aside by the 9000s. I was going to contact Executive Customer Care, but a letter came in the mail saying DSL was now available. I didn't pay much attention to it at first because we had tried to go with DSL before we got the satellite. We were screwed around for two years before we were told that there were not enough customers close to us and that we could not get the service. I checked again some time back and was told we could get DSL, but the cost was $25 per 256k. Today I followed up on the latest letter. 2 -3 Megs for less than the 150 - 600 K I am getting from Hughes. We are waiting for the installer!
  4. On March 21, my Hughes system failed. After about a week an installer came. He replaced the radio, the cables and the modem. At about 9:00 PM on the second day we started up the new system. Download speed was slower than dial-up. The installer had to leave. The next morning the system was working OK -- about 500K downloads. The installer called, and I told him that the system seemed OK. That night, Dial-up again. To make a very long story short -- Today, Apri 25, after countless hours on the phone with Tech Support, Advanced Tech Support and Tier 4, and another visit from an installer, I am experiencing download speeds below 200K in the evening and 500 to 600 at low load times. Tomorrow, I plan to tell Hughes managerment to either fix this mess or I will go to DSL. Comments?
  5. Here's a fairly typical morning test report. About 996 is the highest I've seen recently, although I saw over 1000 right after the system was installed. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 980 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 120 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Sat Jun 18 20:09:46 CDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 18X faster than 56K 1MB download in 8.53 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 21.44 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-G90MNA1RV (SS = 58)
  6. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 129 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 16 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Wed Jun 15 21:52:33 CDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 2X faster than 56K 1MB download in 64 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 16 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-KNPVXJOS1 (SS = 60) Above is typical performance from my DW6000 from about 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM on weeknights. I have been trying for over a month to get Di recway to give me some help. I have spent several hours on the phone with India and with "Tier 3." I have sent about a dozen e-mails. I have been told that my antenna need re-aiming ("SS", above is Signal Strength), but no one came. I have been told that an engineer would call, but he never did. I have threatened to cancel my service and demand a refund, but the threat was ignored. I am on satellite AMC9. It seems clear to me that the satellite is overloaded during peak traffic hours. I would like to hear from anyone with similar problems - particularly if you are on AMC9.
  7. I have run a few dozen test (on testmy) of Firefox vs. IE6. IE has consistently been nearly twice as fast as Firefox on the 2992 kB download test. My IE has all the latest upgrades from Microsoft. These results are a disappointment to me. I like some of Firefox's bells and whistles and I am not a real Microsoft lover. But I can't ignore the speed difference. Firefox is quite a bit faster than Netscape.
  8. 6000, which I am beginning to believe is at least part of the problem.
  9. You guys who post download speeds of 1000 - 1500 Kb/s -- what do you see at 8:00 - 10:00 PM? It was 6:40 PM CDT when I got the following :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 265 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 32 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Mon May 23 18:39:50 CDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 5X faster than 56K 1MB download in 32 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 32.16 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-RPUF5XM4B Things will only get slower until about 11:00 PM. Between 8:00 and 10:00, my download speeds will drop to 130 - 150 Kb/s. The fastest I've ever seen during a mid-morning slack time was 998. I am running W98 SE. I have made all of Direcway's suggested tweaks. I have also made the Rev's tweaks (which did nothing). Any advice on speeding things up would be greatly appreciated.
  10. Here's what I just got - :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 207 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 25 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Sun May 22 21:32:42 CDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB download in 40.96 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 25.12 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-812G5YFVC This is better than average for this time of night. Sometimes 130 - 150. I have applied all of Direcway's tweaks. I have also applied the Rev's (with absolutely no improvement) The best I have seen is 980. Anybody have any good ideas?
