  1. Im not using my router, I have my laptop connected directly to the modem.

My apologies. This is how I interpret your traceroute:

    1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1 [router]

    2 39 ms   *   37 ms 10.13.15.1 [modem]

If that's not the case, I'd give your ISP a call to investigate the packet loss early in the route out from your PC.

  2. I'm not sure about the Ping Utility. How would I check that? It has happened before and randomly it starts working again

When I log into the admin page of my router, I go to Tools and there is a network ping test which allows me to enter a URL or IP address, and my router then sends a ping to that host and tells me if it is able to get through.  If you could find this, it would tell you if the router is getting the proper signal and able to send/receive data from the internet.

  3.

Last week I connected succesfully with my wireless router and had internet explorer working terrificlly with my ISP Roadrunner of Austin.  Alas, this week, I have to bypass the router in order for my explorer to work.  This is no solutiion because I and my wife have our own jobs that we need to connect to and can't do that with the wireless disconnected.

Any ideas so that we can get back to wirless & explorrer working simultaniously?

    Thanks

    Samwise

    Hi Samwise and welcome!

When you hook up the laptop to the router, do you know if it is connecting?  If you are using Windows XP it should tell you in the system tray (bottom right) something like "Wireless Connection | Status: Connected".  Otherwise, you can check by going to 'Network' from the Control Panel.  Knowing this is a good point begin to troubleshoot your issue.

  4. Sorry, I wasn't very clear. To access "CMD" click start > run > and type cmd in the "Open:" field. This will bring you to the command prompt (like MSDOS). Then try the commands I put above, ping and traceroute. You can copy from CMD by right-clicking the screen and choosing "Mark". This allows you to highlight text. Then press enter to copy the highlighted text so you can paste back here.

    Welcome, btw, to TMN!

  5. Got a new modem on Tuesday, seemed to be running fine untill tonight. We did get about 7 inches of snow, but nothing major. Tried to hop on and play some bf2, and my ping kept spiking into the 300's. Reboot the modem, and did a ping to testmy and got crap, and a freaky number in it also.  time=666ms TTL=52

Broadstripe was formerly millennium digital media, who was crap also.  I'm on a 4/512k line. I havnt changed anything, or updated anything in the last few days, just randomly started to turn to crap internet. No cablenut installed. Scanning for virus's and spyware now.

Looks like the first hop in your traceroute shows trouble.  Using a router?  If so -- what kind?  using wireless?  If not using a router -- post up your modem stats (http://192.168.100.1/) and/or call your ISP and let em know about your latency issues!

  6. Ok, I have spent all day searching, Googling, reading, and attempting to figure out what is wrong, and cant seem to figure this out. I am on Windows XP Home Edition and have Verizon DSL base DSL plan. It seemed to work fine when we first got it 3 weeks ago but starting about 2 weeks ago it seemed to get worse and now its just horrible. I have done everything Verizon recommends including:

    checking all filters, connections, etc

    running defrag, cleaning up cache/history

    resetting modem

    rebooting laptop

After two calls to them we have tried running in safe mode, disabling the firewall, and removing AVG altogether. They seem to think that after all this its a PC issue and not on them. At first both techs were reporting issues on their end, but after being on the phone a certain amount of time they seemed to conclude it was not an issue on their end. The last guy suggested a port being used by some sort of malware/virus, etc. I have ran AVG, Spybot and Adaware but come up with nothing.

I dont do any file sharing (limewire, mule, etc) I try not to click on anyhting I shouldnt, and I try to keep the computer maintained with regular clean up and decent protection. It just seems odd the DSL seemed to do ok at first but now basically doesnt work at all. It wont even finish a speed test on Speakeasy, does the download but wont start the upload, and Speedtest.net is where it shows a 4k bps if it even works at all.

How do you check/monitor ports? Would a hijackthis report help? Am I missing files or registry?

I greatly appreciate anyones insight on this :)

A few questions come to mind:  How long has your modem been online?  Do you keep your modem near any other electronic devices (ie. monitor, TV, router, computer)?  Are you connecting wirelessly with your laptop to a router?  What are your laptop stats?  What kind of router are you using?  Did you buy it new or refurbished?  Can you show me a traceroute:

    (from cmd)

    tracert testmy.net -d

and also a 50 hop ping (from cmd)

    ping testmy.net -n 50

I need to see something with some consistency rather than snapshots of your network state.  I'd love to help you out.  Let me know if you have any questions.

  7. yes,,huge improvement.....one question- how do i tell if a packet is timinng out...and exactly what does this mean... oh,,,another question if you don,t mind..how does one tell if a cable modem is bad???

An easy way you can tell if you have packets timing out by ICMP tests -- ie. ping, traceroute.  Let me know if you want any further detail on how to perform or interpret these.

A modem is ultimately bad if it doesn't maintain a connection to the internet or doesn't connect at all.  But it can be bad in less noticeable ways.  For example, it's signal and power levels may be off, which may cause irratic behavior and signal quality.  Also, it may be flapping, which means that it is not maintaining a good quality connection with the server.  You can log into 192.160.100.1 to check the signals and post them back here for us to see.  Otherwise, call your ISP tech support and request escalations until you are satisfied you are speaking with somebody at or above your own technical knowledge level.

  8. yes when the laptop is wired it's great..normal where it should be.....

    just dont' know.

chanell is 11 it was 6 but change. signal is always strong.....no 2.4ghz phones, we have a 5.8 i don't know

It could be the wireless of the router, the wireless adapter of the pc, or general interference.  Here's a few thoughts.  Grab a buddy with a wireless laptop and compare signal strengths and speeds from the same location of your computer to the router.  If they are the same, then it's likely either the router's signal sending ability or some interference (which takes on many many forms).  If they are different, it's likely your wireless adapter - maybe check the antenna (or rig one up) or update drivers.  Check it out.

  9. the router works great. but I have some concerns...if I recall correctly the wireless worked great a while back, but now it seems like I can't get above about 3 mb's is this typical for wireless?

I'm in the same room as the router, full bars and 54mbps connection.  Am I stupid in the fact that I'm overlooking the issue that wireless doesn't give speeds of hardline?

    lets here it guys.

    I don't know anything I can do..

I've changed firmware to the DD and have changed the xmit signal, i wonder how fast i can go without overdoing it?

You might want to hard-wire that same computer into the router to see if there is a boost in speeds.  If there aren't, it's not a wireless problem -- could be the router, the modem, the connection, etc.  If the speeds do improve, it is most likely a wireless issue -- could be signal strength, interference, adapter problem, etc.

  10. well. problem finnally resolved...i live in an apartment complex, and i today i had a message on my answering machine...it was cox cable message, it stated that over half of the people in my complex was have the same problem i had, slow download speeds at night,,...cox said they replaced a part, and thought it would solve my problem......it did,,and now have very good download speeds,,,right. now 6mg/s.....  about time.

Nice!  Lets see some test --
