3. Jeff, Your traceroute isn't great.. but your ISP isn't going to take you seriously until you bypass your router. Especially since the very first hop shows 22 ms, the tendency is to blame your home network. If you connect directly to your modem (via ethernet) and you still show the same latency in your traceroute as in the 3rd hop shown above, which is in your ISPs network, you may be able to convince them that they need to improve their infrastructure. Ask them to open up a ticket with the network administrators.... you need to get to the ppl who can make the necessary changes (although you will probably find that you will not be able to speak with them directly). Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not. I would always recommend that you remain always calm (despite how many transfers you may have been put through), but tell them that you will call back every day until you find your resolution. Give it about 24 hours before you call again (give the engineers a chance to respond), but if you don't find a difference, and if you aren't promised a follow-up time, call again. Sometimes it takes a bit of persistence. Good luck!
4. You should be good. Installation prices differ from area to area....just give a call and ask. It's pretty much non-negotiable.
5. For sure. This is the part of the AUP that i was referring to:
Unless you have specifically subscribed for commercial grade service, the ISP Service is provided to you for personal, non-commercial use only. The service cannot be used for any enterprise purpose whatsoever whether or not the enterprise is directed toward making a profit. If it is your intention to use this service for these purposes, please contact Operator to inquire whether commercial grade service programs are available.
You should be fine as long as you say it's just intended for pleasure use.

7. wyantm06, what I think Roco is suggesting is that you remove the HDD from the laptop and connect it directly to the motherboard of a desktop with a CD drive (after removing its own HDD). This way you can load the OS on the laptop HDD without having to screw with floppy. Although I've never tried this, as long as the connections are the same, I can't see why it wouldn't work (rather resourceful, actually).
8. Dunno. Got a link or install file for ff3? I'll check it out and get back to ya.
9. It shouldn't be necessary - it's really determined by how you intend to use it. If you're using the connection for business purposes, then yeah, they'll push you towards a business account. If you play it off as for pure personal/pleasure use, you'll have a better bet to get residential. It's all in the user agreement / acceptable use policy dealio. Also, if you may have difficulty getting a 2nd res account if you're looking to put them under the same name.
10. I got the hand-me-down Commodore Amiga moved into my room when my parents upgraded to the new, cutting-edge Windows 95 486. It was a pretty sweet deal for me. The Amiga was my first true inspiration to computing.

12. POP UPS !!! I remember those.... Joel, welcome. As above, be sure to scan your computer inside and out for spyware and viruses...use multiple different engines (ie. online scans) for each until you're SURE you've used every fine-tooth comb out there. And don't bother paying for security software... no point, as there are many great freeware out there. And look into getting a browser with a built-in popup blocker. I use Firefox 2.0 --> http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?from=getfirefox Last tip.... quit clicking on the popups! I know that they promise you the world...but it's all lies! (jj...maybe)
13. to detect on DLINK --> Setup > Network Settings > Dynamic DHCP Client List What you may want to do is secure your wireless. You can do this in several ways.... WEP MAC Filter (Allow only) Disable SSID Broadcast ....among others. Any combination of these will also work. Look to the help document for your router for more information on securing your wireless network.
14. The best way to improve your upload is to optimize (simplify) your connection. For example: connect directly - no wireless disable any program which utilizes the internet (IM, P2P, AV, etc) - each of these uses upload in order to maintain a connection to its respective server Try safe mode w/ networking - if you are still experiencing upload speed issues, check the signal levels of your modem. This can usually be done by browsing to http://192.168.100.1 in your browser. You can post them back here if you're not sure what to look for. Another good way to test upload is to upload a large file (5 MB or so) via FTP. Most FTP applications, and also the command line FTP, will show you your speed.
15. Hi M, I think the suggestion of reseating your RAM is a good one. Your RAM sits in slots in your mainboard with little clips on each side. You may want to unclip it (there should be release triggers), and maybe clean it out (ie. Can-O-Air) before you put it back in. When you put the RAM back in, be firm but not jerky. You should hear it click as the clips fall back into place. If you have more than one RAM stick, try swapping positions. Otherwise, it may be that your hard drive is on its way out... If the RAM is not the issue, and since the OS repair didn't work, I would recommend a format + re-install. If you're hesitant to jump to that, or if you can't, try some of the other system tools -- scandisk, defrag, etc. ...but I wouldn't hold your breath.
16. GIXXER, I can sympathize with you that the chat experience you've shared would have been frustrating. Having worked in the industry for some time, I'd like to come to the defense of tech support professionals. Yes -- there is an "approved" troubleshooting approach. This is the approach that works for most situations, most of the time. This is put together from a very large sample of data by a team of people who know the technology and also the situations and problems that arise. That may sound like a lot of nonsense, but if nothing else, it steers the representative in the right direction and is likely to uncover the major issue along the way. To be fair (Gixxer, you may not agree), chat support isn't the best avenue when troubleshooting your connection....it's better suited to email and product support, like webspace and such. I would recommend calling tech support where they can stay on the phone with you while you bypass your router and reset your modem and release your IP and what not (unless you have digital phone....). I know for a fact that the majority of people doing Internet support offshore are very well educated and dedicated people. There is a higher ratio of people with degrees working in call centers in India than anywhere in North America. They also have better attendance. Most of these people have very good English skills too, although the English they learn is of British influence. There is a reason that our tech support jobs are going offshore, just like other lines of work did, and it's certainly not because they do work of lesser quality. I have a Les Paul made by Epiphone, manufactured in China with the same parts as it is in America, bought for less than half of the price of a Gibson (American-made). I've played a Gibson Les Paul of the same model, and I'm no vituoso, but as far as I can tell it plays and sounds the same. I also drive a Civic. My father won't let go of the fact that I should be supporting a North American company, and I do see where he's coming from, but I'm not rich enough to pick and choose otherwise I'd be driving a Cadillac...or maybe a Viper. It's about the value -- where price and quality meet -- and the same applies for businesses like ISPs. It's a very competitive market and at the end of the day it's the $$$ that determines whether the business will die or survive. Plain and simple, offshore companies make more economical sense. There's my rant for the month.
17. Open ports shouldn't matter much, unless they are in use. A firewall can close them down, but may reduce speeds. Check out netstat if you're worried about your ports: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/netstat.mspx
18. All these things. Also, I would say, simply because we can. We feel compelled to destroy, even from a very young age. We are also infatuated with misery. Somehow, it reminds us we're alive. From Robert Burn's From Man was made to Mourn: 'Many and sharp the num'rous ills Inwoven with our frame! More pointed still we make ourselves Regret, remorse, and shame! And Man, whose heav'n-erected face The smiles of love adorn, - Man's inhumanity to man Makes countless thousands mourn!
19. GIXXERGUY6 That definitely needs some work. It's most often something that can be pinpointed and fixed. The trouble is, it could be one of many different things, or any combination of different things. I recommend starting here, because it's a great guide: http://www.testmy.net/t-2097 Post back as much as you can. We can start there.
20. What an amazing story. One can only wonder how many people took similar secrets from that era to their graves.
21. Sometimes it can be your modem having power level issues. Try bringing up http://192.168.100.1 in your browser to take a look. Post em if you aren't sure. It may have been a maintenance window on the network. RR has a "Network Status" page that might be worth a look: http://help.rr.com/HMSLogic/network_status.aspx
