  1. In Reply to: Re: Here's a free way to trace how many servers your browser is going through to get to WG?... posted by Jeffro on October 7, 2004 at 10:15 PM: Cable internet is a Shared bandwidth. What that means, is that everyone on the internet using cable in a certain area, all share the same connection. And the more people who sign on to that connection, the slower your connection will get. I've heard some people say that at times, their Cable modem gets slower than Dialup at times of peak useage. I did that same test with my DSL, and got 15 hops too, but my computer is still connecting fast to this site. Here's a link to HowStuffWorks.com, that will explain how cable modems work, and why it's a shared bandwidth. You can also find a link to DSL, and how that works too. They both have pros and cons, and one of the cons of DSL, is that you must be within a certain distance to the provider's central office. I'm lucky enough to be close enough that I get a great connection speed of 1.269Mbps, which is also limited I think because I am going through a wireless connection. Here a link from McAfee.com where you can actually test your connection speed to see how you're running. Since you are using a Cable connection, try this test at different times during the day and night, to see how much of a difference there is at peak hours (generally in the afternoon), and in off peak hours (generally in the middle of the night). i found this post when i was searching about tracert tests. looks like i cant do anything about it if what this guy wrote is true. looks like im gonna have to suck it up, oh now i know what a tracert test is, wow computers are so complicated and i thought i was good with them.

Oh i have road runner as my ISP, and i live in philadelphia. im currently using a 4 port linksys router. i have windows xp home edition and i have almost no spyware and have a ton of ram cuz i know to make sure that i keep my computer clean.
