But, to my knowledge hardwired systems are faster than wireless systems. Have you tweaked your connections? take care, compuworm Yes months ago I had to play around a lot to get better speeds - This site was a great help for sure! - I am happy to have gotten DSL about a year ago even though I live in a relatively remote area. Also, what kind of router do you have you could (if you have a linksys) download a firmware called hyperwrt to actually increase your transmit power as I have this to has increased my speed. compuworm I did use Vanburen's Cablenut settings - I have a Westell 327W that comes free with Verizon DSL - l looked into increasing the transmit power but did not find anything - I think I am going to have to run some CAT5 to two other desktops I have, as I live in an old house that is laid out in a way that makes wireless hard to do. compuworm Posted January 6, 2006 CID Share Posted January 6, 2006 I have a wrt54gs router from linksys and I got rid of the stock antenna and put on larger 7 gain. This definitely increased my range and I got better signal strenght. I don't know if you could put on larger antennas but you might consider it. I work with linksys routers so I can't say if there is a firmware for your router that will allow an increase of transmit power. WEP or SSID? if so I would suggest disabling these features and going with a Mac Filter set up instead. Still secures your connection keeping other users away, but with the slow down of signal encryption. Also do you have Hardwired computers and are they giving you any problems. compuworm Posted January 7, 2006 CID Share Posted January 7, 2006 Sorry for the late reply, yes, I have wired and wireless. Of course though the wired units get better speeds. I have done quite abet of tweaking and I believe I have gotten the best speeds possible. I go with Comcast and I get 6000/384, but with tweaking I get 7000 up. I go with MAC filtering already as my neighboor was using my wireless signal. One thing I can suggest too speed up your system a little faster is to reinstall your NIC drivers which seem to get corrupted over time. Also, look for a driver update for your NIC this could help to. Also, are you running at 10 Half or full duplex with regards to your NIC. I tried once at running at 100 full duplex but this simply was not good, after reducing back to 10 full duplex the system ran butter. Anyway, just some things to consider on those cold lonely nights!
