jakester Posted March 7, 2006 CID Share Posted March 7, 2006 newbie here looking for advice. i get my interent via wireless from reciever on roof to router to several different machines. speeds are supposed to be 1 to 1.5 kbps which i rarely get even when i eliminate the router and plug in direct to the laptop more like 500 or so. I am not getting much help from my isp (xplornet) is there anything i can do to get the speeds up to where they are supposed to be? IF you log about 30 or so tests over 2 weeks at random times that are under 1/2 of advertised and email them to tech support, then call them 40 or 50 times, spend 20 or so hours on hold, they will tell you it's your fault! and it is because you gave them your trust. If you get real lucky with a level 2 tech he may update your settings and give you a tad more speed in the burst. but don't look for any more than about .6 for continuous downloads of 5 megs or more. jsutton Posted July 20, 2006 CID Share Posted July 20, 2006 Unfortunately, he also makes it clear in his small print literature to you that yours is a BEST EFFORT service, not a guaranteed bandwidth. The entreneurial WISP types have their own picture on how much bandwidth you SHOULD get which doesn't mate to their Marketing statements of speed. Suggestion is to use a big site like DSLReports to test the speed and make comment in the COMMENTS box that the servie is NEVER what the WISP promised. That way others looking in your area for service , and the WISP management, willsee the negative comments. Also, I'd take the measurements and like letters to BBB, Chamber of Commerce and State PUC Consumer Protection. Same letter, takes you 15 minutes -- but it'll damn sure put the WISP on notice and perhaps motivate him to TWEAK your settings UP to where they should be. fryguy9228 Posted January 6, 2007 CID Share Posted January 6, 2007 I have the satellite internet from Xplornet. Had it for months now. I've got the KaBang. Supposed to be 1 Mbps down and 256 Kbps up. Not a chance. Usually half that or less. A lot of stalls and disconnects. I wouldn't recommend it for the money. Not only the monthly fee, but you have to pay an arm and a leg for installation and the equipment. Anytime I call tech support, they do nothing to help. Is there any way to get better service out of these guys? I called tech support last night because I kept getting dissconnected. There has not been a single day that I've had a constant connection. This time they said I got FAPed. This is not true. I monitor my data transfer and it was no where near the 169MB limit. Tried the modem, tried the anit virus, tried the spyware, took my computer to work with no probems. They have a list of excuses to get rid of you. Don't buy it. If you're having constant problems, it's on their end but they won't admit it. I've troubleshooted ever possible scenario and it all boils down to them having crap service. I am expecting a "LEVEL 2" call today because I stumped the "LEVEL 1" guy last night. I will keep everyone posted and I will continue to spread my story until I am satisfied with their service or get a refund on the $800 installation and equipment charge. There are employees of Xplornet that post here as well and they have nothing but good things to say. Do your research people. Just got off the phone with Telus and they will have DSL in my area within 2 months. That means that Xplornet will only have my business for 2 more months!!! Thank God!!! Nothing worse than crap service. It seems that's the only kind you get in Alberta!!! Kills me to have paid $800 for equipment and installation. I'll never have anything good to say about Xplornet.
