I was wondering does any know of or can you recommend a program that would help enhance older photos.  I've got some pics that are older that I've scanned but they are somewhat blurry or grainy looking.  I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to the process of cleaning up photos so I need some help.  I'd like something fairly simple to use but powerful enough to make older pics look nice.

Any ideas? :?::?:

Also is there  program that can enhance something in a photo that is at a distance in the photo & somewhat blurry?  Thanks for your help!!

coknuck: Thanks for the 100-downloads.com link I think its going to be useful to me.I put it in my URL file.

I'm DLing the Faststone Viewer  & I'm going to give it a try.

I now use Ifranveiw which I'm satisfied with & would recommend too.It sounds like the features are similar in both. But the proof is in the using So I will see which one I like best.

Try Photogenics

The Photogenics program is more pricey than I'd like....plus to be honest its a little overwhelming for me.  I'm needing something simple but powerful if I can find it.

Another question that may seem a bit dumb but I was wondering.....when you magnify a portion of a photo it gets more grainy or blurry....what do you do to get that cleared up or sharpen that portion?

coknuck ; I like free stuff too.I already have the second link but thanks for posting it someone else might not have it.

dman58; I don't think there is any way to clear ir more than the "sharpen" features of the program will.I think the problem is not enough pixels to work with.

I don't have one of the expensive programs like Photoshop it may have other features to correct this.Maybe some Photoshop expert will post.

You can't really do anything to get more detail.  You could maybe sharpen it to make it look clearer, but you can't make more detail than the picture has.  (The reason digital zoom on cameras really isn't that useful)

jeffwalker9999;I might take you up on the jasc paintshop but I have dial-up & 107 MB DL's don't work too well.

dman58 ;php is pretty good with this stuff so he's probably correct.I think you have the same problem I have when you enlarge it enough you get bigger & bigger digital "squares". If you convert the photo to a .bmp it will help a little because a .bmp has more bytes. If you have the actual photos or can make good copies A good photography studio or lab that has "mechanical" enlargers & other equipment can do a lot.

It might be more than you want to spend but is an option.

I do have a scanner but its not the best.  I've been working with some old photos; scanning them & then trying to clean them up to make them look sharp.  Not much success yet but still hoping.  All the input is helping though!  Thanks!

dman58;I did some web surfing on this .Theres a lot of information Heres some of what I found.

The first link explains why you get the blur & a way to correct it some.

These 3 are about lens type enlargers.

This is some info I found if you had photoshop or a program that could use this method(I copied& pasted the quoted information I can't sat if it works):

"The trick is (and it's not my invention) to upsize your image in a few steps, increasing

it's size by 10% at a time with bicubic resampling turned on.

I'm talking about Photoshop BTW. I can not explain why, but this process does an amazing

job versus just trying to double or triple the size of an image at once. Like I said I did

not loose much detail and images did not become blocky.

Once you try this process and if it works for you, you could create an action in photoshop

and assign a function key to it, so you can upsize any image by 10% at a time by simply

pressing a key.

the 10% method is the method recommended by adobe people"

This is a link to the Adobe Forums there are several so try a few & see if they have some

better answers.

I don't have the software in this link but if it works it might do what you want.

I did DL & try the program below:

http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/

Image Analyzer

Make sure & DL this plugin also "fractional interpolation".Then put it in the plugin file for this program. Then try your resizing using it.I tried it with a B&W I had & it did a lot better than using resize in another veiwer. The fractional interpolation is in the plugin pulldown of the program window.
