i am interested in building or buying a gaming computer. kinda wanna build so i can learn some more but would get a pre-built if it was cheaper. i don't really know much on processors and motherboards. not sure about a graphics or sound card and how much memory ill need.  AMD vs. intel not sure if one is better for gaming or not. i plan to spend around 1500 give or take. so any input would be appreciated. i wanna build something that i wont have to upgrade for too long.

Cool. Building your own computer is very fun. I just built my first one. Some pre-builts can be cheaper or more expensive, but the prices are basically the same.

If you don't know much about computers, I don't know how much you know, then building your own computer can be a challenge. On the plus side, you will learn a lot of new things. One example is, your motherboard, CPU, and memory all have to be compatible. Like when I built my comp, I made the mistake of buying a processor that fit in to the motherboard, but it was "too new" for that motherboard revision. Luckily I was able to return it. Your options for add-in cards and drives will be more since most conform to industry-wide standards. Not that CPU's etc. don't.

Anyway,

i plan to spend around 1500 give or take. so any input would be appreciated. i wanna build something that i wont have to upgrade for too long.

We're here to help you along the way. I'd say $1500 would be pretty good for a computer.

1500 dollars can build you a beast man - no need for quad sli cards LOL (some people might be like, pfff....i need 8 of them) - but yeah, i can help you all the way from start to finish - choosing the right components and making sure everything works together - i have access to a large stock of computer hardware, so i have pretty much tried out 100's of different hardware configurations :)

hit me up on aim: disturbed6dws if you are interested.....

...i am also building computers for people, if you would rather have it built by someone :) either way, AIM me :)

AMD is the winner for gaming, 2GB of ram would be good as alot of the newer games use well over a gig to run smoothly and load fast.

When looking at the parts there are some things to look out for. Make sure the motherboard and Cpu are compatible (same socket). The NForce 4 chipset is best chipset out as far as i knoe for the AMD 64 series. Main thing is don't cheap out on a PSU. Enermax, antec are 3 that i have experience with and are very good. A low quality PSU is a disaster waiting to happen. They can fry components or whole systems.

even for a gaming comp i think it's a good bet to start out with a retail box. you get lots of little bells and whistles for practically free (card readers, removable drives and the like) plus a windows license and depending on the bundle other software (usually a word and works, maybe an av subscription or other stuff. remember that if you want to run the system legal the winxp home license alone will bite you to the tune of 200 bucks. it's free in a box.

pick a box from one of the vendors that has most of the kit you want in it then upgrade it with storebought parts, sell off any excess parts on e-bay.

You also would save a lot of time assembling it. And everything will be in place. You would have a warranty on everything being where it should be. And everything would be connected correctly. It is easier and cheaper to upgrade a car, than to build it from scratch. Just an opinion.
