Gaming and Verizon Wireless Card (VZAccess)

the signal travels from the card to the tower via the concentrator to the backbone. usually not longer or shorter (on average) than a wired connection.

latency increases are possible due to packet retransmissions because of poor signal/interference.

compared to pointing a dish at the heavens and praying the signal bounces off the moon to reach d-way or wildblue the latency will be low as hell.

hey drquack, do you know what technology they are using in your area?

i.e: EVDO, 1xRTT, etc..

That makes a difference on my Sprint wireless service I have on my work laptop.

In EVDO areas (typically in or near the city limits) I get around 250-300ms latency.

In 1xRTT areas (typically rural around here) I get up to an 800ms ping time.

edit:  just fired up the notebook and pinged a gateway and today I am getting a 175-250ms (avg 228ms) ping time. Not bad. It is in EVDO mode, btw.

Now I forced it to 1xRTT mode and here are the stats for 100 ping requests:

minimum = 336ms, maximum = 998ms, average = 507ms

Mare than double the echo time than EVDO mode.

Now, this is Sprint and not Verizon, but hopefully this gives you some info to go on.

Here is a speedtest comparison:

1xRTT: 105 Kbps or 0.11 Mbps (13kB/s) using 384k test  (ouch)

EVDO: 551 Kbps or 0.55 Mbps (67kB/s) using 579k test.

Speeds obviously vary, I have seen days where I get over 1mbps easily.

But the EVDO service is decent, the 1xRTT is pretty much excruciatingly aggravating.

Hope this helps.

BroadbandAccess is available in 181 major metropolitan areas covering over 148 million people, and is expanding coast to coast. BroadbandAccess is available in 72 primary airports in the U.S. Speeds based on our network tests with 5MB FTP data files without compression. Actual speeds and coverage may vary.

you sure they cover your place? if you are so far out in the sticks you can't get cable/dsl or isdn...

No, i dont know what technology they are using

Thanks for the info man, have you ever tried to play games on that card?

I have not ever tried gaming on the wireless PC since it is my work PC.

I am curious about the results, if I try a little gaming on it, I will let you know.

With this, i get pings in the 700's if im lucky. and this is when im on 2 out of 4 bars. im out in the middle no nowhere

Im going to try and use cable nut and see if my connection improves. I think im going to go with a satellite and dial-up binded connection to get the best for playing video games.

Well just to let you know that Verizon is very strict on there usage policy bec. they dont tell you this but they have a 10GB monthly allowance b-4 they decided to cancel your card service on you, i never knew this untill later on when they sent me a letter in the mail and canceled my service the following day, but overall in Orlando where i live i got good service and speeds on 1MB+ 98% of the time and on the interstes driving i would get about 300KB/S with 200-250m/s ping times so just be ware about this b-4 you buy and sign a contract!!!!!!

P.S. Does Sprint have a "Montly Allowance" Like Verizon does?
