advertised 24Mbps/1Mbps extremely slow ( help me)

Hi, I'm using the ADSL 2+ which is advertised 24000/1000, but in fact I can only download by 1.1 to 1.3 Mega byte per second (using internet download manager) which is 2 times slower than what I expected. My upload speed is arround 25Kbps which is 5 times slower than I expected. My os is window xp sp2, I'm using fire fox 1.5, zonealarm security 6, kaspersky antivirus 5, spysweeper 4.5, anti keylogger 7.2, so I think I have no problem with virus, spyware and whatsoever.

Can anyone please help me solve out this matter? I'm extremely dissapointed with this kind of speed. Thanks in advance

Where are you from? And which ISP are you with?

If it's ADSL it depends on how far you are from the exchange you're connected to and the quality of your line.

Your ISP should be advertising it as "UP TO 24 Mbps", did you have a closer look?

It's unlikley you will be able to get 24 Mbps, even 20 Mbps is hard, unless you live like < 500 meters away from the exchange.

Do you know your attenuation and line noise stats?

Make sure you have filters on all other devices using the same line as your ADSL, first try dissconnecting all other devices from the line and seeing if it improves your speeds.

But what you're getting now is an above average speed regardless, it's decent. Although your upload should be maxing out at ~ 850 Kbps, which is about 105 KB/s.

If you are in Australia (because you're calling it ADSL and we have 24/1 plans here, I'm guessing you may be...) try running the upload test to this mirror: http://www.testmy.net/ou-mirror-ShaneAu2

Shane

firstly, let me thank for your help. i'm from Australia, my isp is iinet and they have said "up to 24Mbps", but my location is in the metro zone, so i should be getting the speed arround 2 to 2.3 Mbps at least, also i cant perform the upload speed test in this server, my download speed test in this server is slower than what I get as I download by internet download manger, is ther any solution that might help me to tweak up my connection???

Metro or not, I live in metro (Sydney) too, but I can get a max of 1.6 MB/s, I live about 1.7 KM from the exchange.

You need to know how far away you are from the exchange, I'm guessing about 2 KM. I'm assuming it's the fastest speed you're going to archive, which really isn't that bad!

And for that test link I gave you, it was for your upload speed, not download. What were the results? Should have been about 100 KB/s.

Cheers,

Shane

Try these:

Then after doing all those pick out a file and try:

Now you want to let the cablenut set in a couple of days, to get full results!  ;)

I got caught out with this, I live in rural France and was promised ADSL 8Mbps and a relevant upload when I signed with Cegetel, and being only 450 meters from my exchange I foolishly believed them.

To my surprise 2432 / 320 Kbps is all they could offer...

Since I have changed to Wanadoo.fr I don't appear to have gained any speed, but the connection seems to be more stable.

Needing a better upload than the 210Kbps I average, I asked / begged my ISP if there was any way I could have a lower download, and increase the up "impossible" I was told. Can any of you knowledgeable types confirm this???

Hey tommie  :D

I have tried most things and I've done cablenut and sat on the adjustments for a few days but with very little effect.

Having used dial up for years, I was amazed by ADSL connections, now I want faster, some people are never happy  :evil6:

I dream of a 20/10 connection, I think I'll move to Amsterdam

lol you can me both

i recently found out i had been using uncapped ADSL for the past yr and a half they brought me a new modem and now i get 1.5/256 i called them and asked if there was anything i could do to have my upload increased because 25KB/s isn't much when you split that between 4 computers its roughly 6.25KB/s try playing FPS games with that :P they told me the next package up is uncapped and is $92 a month i laughed and hung up
