Problems with upload speed

Hi all. New to this community but love all the info I have found here so far.

I'm sorry if a similar problem has been posted here before, but I could not find it.

Basically my upload speed is being terrible, my downloads and everything is fine, just my upload speed.

I am a little computer illiterate but I will try my best to give you as much info as I can.

Running Windows XP Pro and my internet is with Bigpond ADSL broadband on a 1500 / 256kbps  connection.

As I mentioned I am having no problem at all with my download speed but upload speed is like rediculously low to the point of not working  :cry:

I rang the tech support at bigpond but they said it looked to be working and there was nothing they could do to help me.

Mainly noticing the upload lag on ventrilo when trying to talk, my ping skyrockets and just wont send when i talk. Also with trying to upload files to my webspace.

Someone told me my hardware might be slowing it down, but I cannot see it causing this great a problem. Here is the details from system properties:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.54GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Apparently I should be getting between 17-25kbs on my uploads. But after taking the test here I seem to be far from it.

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 6 Kbps about 0.01 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)

Upload Speed is:: 1 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net  (Server 2)

Test Time:: 2006/04/26 - 11:25pm

Bottom Line:: 0X faster than 56K 1MB Upload in 1024 sec

Tested from a 97 kB file and took 137.68512 seconds to complete

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 3.57 % of your hosts average (net.au)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-RJQ6S8HVZ

:oops:

That is such a horrible score! lol

Please any advice or assistance for this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I found your post because I am having the same exact problem.  Although this is only my 4th post, I have already been given some help.  Thanks to tommie, my upload speed has increased from 45% of average to 85%.  Not a perfect score, but by definition, someone has to be below average.  Tommie told me to clean my temporary files and history, but most importantly shut off Norton and my firewall.  This helped me, hope it helps you too.  In addition, do not use the smart test, use the next largest file, gives the computer time to work.
