It'll work just fine, my goodness.  And it is the same socket, look at the CPU-Z screenshots.

just because its the same socket doesnt mean it will work. according to what you are saying a 478 core duo will then work because its the same socket.

to sum it up, the possible problems far outweigh the possible few percentage points gained in speed.

grab her comp and let it run folding@home for the summer or something. use it as a secondary comp. (just be sure that all her school work is backed up before doing something with it. really sure.

There's a slight difference between a dual core processor and a just a different core.  The only real difference between the two CPUs is the cache.  Everything else is the same.
