Comcast "PowerBoost" proven unuseful

Sorry to disappoint ya'll, Comcast's "theoretical speed burst" doesn't work as it sounds. According to comcast, the bursted speeds should apply to even a 600+ MB game being downloaded...

But in reality, I've tried downloading several "large" files:

BF2Patch 1.03

Nero Burning ROM 7.2.0.3b

Optimum Online's 64 MB FTP test file

And the result is... around 30 MB completion, the speed drops very low...

Looks like Comcast did not provide what they were claiming...

Here, I highlighted their claim, and also added comments on how they did NOT achieve what they were imagining (to beat FiOS).

Agentgod, are you certain that it's in your area yet? My wife does work with huge voice files that are transferred through an ftp server. What normally would take her about 10 minutes took her about 30 seconds to download an hour and a half long voice digital voice file. She was downloading it from Idaho. This is the speed I'm getting after the comcast technician left my area today. So, it works for me.  :haha: :::.. Download Stats ..:::

Yeah, they do suck lol.  I noticed that in the powerboost article at comcast.com they chose their words wisely when describing powerboost. Would it kill them to just say this will be a legit no bs speed upgrade??? Why of course it would...then nerds like you and I would call and complain until the cows came home that we aren't getting our advertised speed!  :confused1:

Here's an article over at BBR, indicating that PowerBoost is a scam (which proves my analysis correct):

"...Users are supposed to get an additional chunk of bandwidth during the first quarter or half of a significant download - provided network capacity is available - after which the speed is throttled back to your regular capped speed...."

Source: http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/75298

The facts clearly contradict what Comcast is trying to prove in their propaganda in PowerBoost. I had so much hopes up that "PowerBoost" was going to be the ultimate upgrade, but I guess I had too much hope in Comcast.

As for what Comcast says:

"...Downloading a 686MB game takes only 12 minutes on Comcast

As I said, it only "boosts" for files less than 20 MB  :haha:, otherwise, it doesn't go the whole way, and slows down at around 20 - 30 MB. As I said, the first thing I've noticed this on was when I was trying to download a Battlefield 2 patch, and the speed just... took a dive.

As anyone would be thinking, would NOT be their connection, and rather the server they are trying to download from. But not this time, this time, it was "PowerBoost".

You all have to remember,, You can only download as fast as some one can give you.. So we may be downloading more than 8-10Mb/second but most websites out there limit the amount of upload speed to prevent network congestion and give all users the same flow of traffic....I have yet seen a website that can give me an upload of more than 2MB a second..

Issue has been resolved here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16358475~days=9999~start=20

As for not giving more than 2 MB a sec, you are mistaken, once again. AIM's web site is very capable of handling the speed. And please read the thread from BBR above, that I've brought up the same issue.
