Static IP Question

I have a small office connection with HughesNet, and a static IP. However it apparently is not a public IP, because when I go to Whatismyip.com it gives me a different IP. Hughes support has told me that I do, in fact, have a static IP but that it is not a public one. Is that possible?? And more to the point is there anyway around this?? I have a stand alone camera that has a  built in server. All I want is for the outside world to be able to view it. Really need help with this. Thanks

OK

Do you have a DW7000?  If so, the DW7000 modem will not assign the static IP to the device you have connected to it.  You will have to manually assign the IP to the device.  Browse to http://192.168.0.1/

and click on system info.  The static IP that you assign to the device will be one higher than the IP of the DW7000.

For more information go here:  http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13545

It gives detailed instructions on the issue....

Thanks for your help guys.

I guess I should have gone into more detail as to what I had done already. I do have a DW7000, and as (dlewis23) suggested I went to www.dslreports.com/faq/13545 and followed that advice.  I first went into start, control pnl, lan connections, internet protocol (TCP/IP) properties and clicked on use the following IP and added the IP ADDR, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway, then clicked on Use the following DNS Server Address and added the Preferred and Alternate DNS Server Address. Then  backed out of that and restarted machine and went into Run and added COMMAND and in DOS typed IPCONFIG to verify all. Then put in software for new Linksys BEFSX41 router and followed directions. It read my IP Config.I then changed the cabling to place my router in line. Then went into router at 192.168.1.1 to verify everything. Did Port Forwarding on camera. Then went into my browser and first typed local IP 192.168.1.254 and my camera came up. Then went into browser again and typed in my static IP 67.xx.xxx.xx0 and again my camera came up. Would appear all is well, at least  behind router. When I go to www. whatismyip.com it comes up with a different IP. Hughes uses a transparent proxy, which they claim wont hurt a thing. I then went to DynDNS and set up an account. They have two ways of checking your IP. The first one (checkip.dyndns.org) finds the same IP as whatismyip finds which WILL NOT WORK, but their second one (checkip.dyndns.org:8245) does in fact find my static IP. However when someone from outside of my router tries to put in my address to look at camera it does not work. I have tried everything I can think of to get this thing to work. My knowledge of networking is zero. I have read everything I could get my hands on plus what you guys have shared with me and still no success.

I am beginning to wonder if "Anyone that has a Hughes Satellite Connection with a Static IP has ever been able to make it work?"  I can't see any difference between their so called static IP and the dynamic IP.

I sure hope someone can get me on the right track because as it stands right now I am dead in the water, so to speak.

Thanks,

Desperate

If you search the forums at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/sat there are a couple of threads that deal with this exact problem.  (Setting up remote cameras)  They did get it to work.

You need to manually input your IP address at the dyndns.org site. (1 higher than the DW7000 address)  That was the only I was ever able to get it to work right.  When their site autodetects your IP, it detects the DW7000's IP address, NOT the IP address that you want to route.  The DW7000 automatically forwards all ports to the static IP address that you pay for.

Hi ghostmaster,

Thank you so much for the quick response. I used the system info page to obtain the LAN1 IP Address which was 6x.xx.xxx.209 and made that the Default Gateway Address (Modem). I then added one to that number and made it my Static IP Internet Address 6x.xx.xxx.210. That is the number I used at DynDNS. Does that sound correct?

I was just wondering....What if I were to add Port number 8245 at the end of my DNS?

Do you think that would do anything? That is what dyndns did in order to see my IP.

Thanks,

Tom

That is the correct IP to use.  Now you would need to set that IP manually on the router if you havn't already.  And then forward the port to the IP address of the camera.  After that you could add the port at the end of the DNS (http://yourdns.dydns.org:8245), or simply point a web browser to http://6x.xxx.xxx.210:8245 to access camera from the outside.

Good Luck!
