mrproper;I asked VanBuren to explain some of the settings for ADSL & PPPoA to me in your other post I would like to know myself.

dlewis23;If I understand the way that MTU works is that if it is 1 byte too large the packets need to be defragmented & even if it is just 1 byte over it gets its own packet.

This is why with a MTU of 1500 you can Ping testmy.net -f -l 1472 & the packet doesn't fragment but if you Ping testmy.net -f -l 1473 it does fragment.

The ping order varies some with OS's For example yours might work better with Ping -f -l testmy.net 1472 or Ping  -f -l 1472 testmy.net .I just use testmy for an example this is with any site you can ping. The reason for 1472 is the header of 28 bytes. 1472 +28 =1500. & thats -l a small L not a 1 or I.

My ISP blocks ping but I can still show you the basics of what I am talking about.Your ping in the second .jpg will look like it usually does except the latency should be more. Mine is what blocked ping looks like but the packets don't defragment until I use 1473.

The first pic just shows the ping options I have.

The 3rd one shows packets fragmenting.

the MTU is off, since your on PPPoA the MTU should be 1500

read the manual for your router/modem and see if you can set MTU manually to 1500

you show packetloss here

thats between your modem/router and CO. If you use a phone extension wire, try replace it or bypass it and connect modem/router direct to your house main phone socket.

I had MTU set to 1500 vefore, but I changed because of TCPOptimizer suggestion. I have set it again to 1500. And I repeat the tests now. I don't have extensionss or something like that.

MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1456

Maximum useful data in each packet = 1456, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 513968

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits (scale factor of 6)

Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64246

RWIN is a multiple of MSS

Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

512512 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

256256 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

128128 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

64064 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

I had MTU set to 1500 vefore, but I changed because of TCPOptimizer suggestion. I have set it again to 1500. And I repeat the tests now. I don't have extensionss or something like that.

Make sure to set MTU to 1500 for all adapters, and reboot your PC after that...

Do I have to modify any settings in Cablenut with MTU=1500?

the cablenut settings i gave you, is made for a 1500 MTU, but your router or NIC adapter is forced to 1496

Vanburen, I forced MTU ** in the router** to 1496 because TCPOptimizer told me that it was the optimum value. Now I have changed again the value ** in the router ** and set to 1500, and rebooted PC. But where else do you want me to change the value?

open TCP Optimizer, and click Custom, change MTU to 1500

scroll in the list of adapters (see the arrow) so all adapters is set to 1500

click apply and reboot your PC

make a new speed test both against Swizz NDT test and testmy.net, also a test here https://www.speedguide.net:8080/

mrproper's MTU & MSS have tested off in this & the other post at least with the TCPIP analyzer test.They show MTU1496 & MSS 1456.

I wanted to ask is the TCPIP analyzer test At speedguide.net any good for Windows XP It seems to be more for 9X OS's. The RWIN it reads seems to be MSS based instead of AFD parameter based.

mrproper : Theres no problem with seeking more help & VanBuren knows a lot about these settings.That's why I'm asking him to explain this better to me so I can help someone better the next time.

try this aswell

A: Download DRTCP021.zip from Here to your desktop.

For MTU, using the drop-down menu in DRTCP, set your NIC (Ethernet adapter) to 1500. Tab to Apply and click it, Exit, re-boot, re-test, re-post.

If you use PPPoA, follow the same directions, but use your dial-up adapter instead.

dlewis23;Those were questions I was asking VanBuren .He answered that.I don't know why  that is what the common value is yet.Or even that it was until Van answered.I agree with you I always saw the 1492 as the setting for ADSL & other DSL It was supposed to have something to do with the header Like the -28 for checking the ping for a MTU of 1500 .Or the

-40 from the MTU for the MSS value.I read somewhere the exact  reason for the 1492 but I don't remember it right now.I will see if I can find something on it & post it.Just remember I have dial-up & all this is just what I'm still learning.

great, now the MTU is where it suppose to be :)

but speed could be better, congestion seems to be a problem, so you could try lower the RWIN a bit.

try this, open cablenut

change TcpWindowSize and GlobalMaxTcpWindowsize to 128480

click save to registry and reboot

now test speed again against Swizz and testmy.net

also test speed against my mirror

I don't think there is something else to do, your MTU is correct, the settings is fine, you could try increasing RWIN, but it might backfire when congestion starts ticking in... As larger RWIN you have, the more speed will suffer when a packet is lost.

With DSL, speed depends on how far away from CO you are, and the quality on the phonelines. That means you ISP cap modem at a certain rate eg 10 Mbps, but distance and quality on phoneline might only hold 8 Mbps max. Thats part of the reason ISP

My ISP advertises download speeds "up to" 20 Mb, and because I am a certain distance from the CO and the quality of my phone line, my router gives me only 9 Mb. But I think that a download speed of 3 Mb is rather bad. I really thnik that this can be improved. I don't know how to because I don't know very much about registry settings, etc.

If you think everything is ok, could you give me al least some advise and values to modify?. I would do tests and compare results on my own.

like he said there isnt much more that can be done, you may just simply not be able to get faster then what you are at now. you could be on the outer edge of DSL's distance. If your anywere over 10,000 feet with ADSL2 your not going to go very fast maby 5mbps max.

dlewis23, if I reached 5 Mbps ** regularly **...... I would be very happy, but you can see the results of my speed tests, all made at different hours and different servers.

I think that "something" could be done, couldn't it?

honestly i dont know what more can be done. have you called your ISP and asked for a tech to come out and take a look and see if anything is wrong?

and try diffrent settings, just make sure to use 1500 as MTU

latency is usually between 150 and 300 ms, try whats best for you.

Thanks cholla for your help, but I think that although Vanburen was helping me, you could have continued helping me too. I went to him because he is the author of Cablenut, and I suppose that he is the best to known his own software, but I have never denied your help. (Forgive my english. It's not very good, but I think you know what I mean).  :D

I attach again my current Cablenut screen. And you are right: there are a lot blanks, but it's the .css file that Cablenut gave me, except two parameters that he told me to change. I don't know if it's normal or not but Vanburen gave it to me. I suppose it's ok.

The screenshots you show me (calculated in http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php) is what you or dlewis23 told me in the original post, isn't it? But my problem was how to calculate the "latency". TCPOptimizer program has a tool to calculate it and doesn't use any file to download. The explained way in j79zlr.com involves to calculate the latency running a tracert while downloading a large file.

So my questions are:

1) Which is the correct way to calculate it? TCPOptimizer or j79zlr.com?

The first one gives me a latency between 490 and 500:

2) When I do a tracert, against which server or page? Is it the same? I live in Spain. Should I choose a spanish server to tracert and/or a file to download from a spanish server? The example above is made against testmy.net and the file is from ftp://ftp.newaol.com/aol6.0/179902/setupaol60.exe.

If you looked at the pins I did & put in screen shots of when me & dlewis23 were discossing ping in this topic

You will notice I did: ping testmy.net -f -l 1472 If you ping with this it will give you the maximum latency to the site you choose to ping.Just substitute anoter site for testmy if you want to.Do this to 10 different sites & take the average of all of them.

then use that average in the cablenut calculator.

I have made a tracert against google.es ten times and have obtained an average latency of 178 ms (while downloading the large file linked in http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php).

I have made a tracert against testmy.net ten times and have obtained an average latency of 263 ms. (while downloading the same file).

1) Is it correct doing it while downloading a file or not? I don't understand how affects it to latency (I suppose it gives you a worse value of latency).

2) Latency = (178+263)/2=220,5 ms, is it ok?

Cholla, for these values (Down=9000, latency=220), I attach you the results in CableNut and TCPOptimizer.

Have a look at them and suggest me any change.
