Fast Connection - Slow Computer

My 10Mb connection was constantly very fast it seemed, but today my sister came to stay for a few days away from university.

she asked me if she could use the pc i told her that she could just use her lappy and not downlaod spyware on my machine,  so i hooked it up via ethernet and off she went.... i couldnt help but do a quick speed test and to my amazement she had a constant test result of 9.4Mb......

my machine is now gettting slower..... obviosuly its not the connection because she can achiebve high speeds and my computer is just slow... the max i get is 5mb nothing faster...

thats a constant.... what can i do on my computer to speed things us browsing and when downloading....

1. What OS are you running? Windows XP SP2 installed fix still no difference.

2. Who your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is, and what the advertised speed for download/upload is.

3. What tweaking programs you already have installed, and run this test.  Copy all text and paste it in your post! For security reasons, blank out your IP #.

MTU = 1454

MTU sometimes used in PPPoA applications. If not, consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.

MSS = 1414

Maximum useful data in each packet = 1414, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits

Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65535

Note: TCP 1323 Options need to be enabled for RWIN over 2^16 (65535). Windows 9x might also need the MS Vtcp386 fix.

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

520352 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)

260176 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)

130088 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)

65044 (MSS x 46)

Well, your problem is very common.  Let me give you an ISP tech support line:  Computer maintenance is priceless.  My computer also has 512 MB RAM...it by far isn't the fastest machine out there.  However, weekly I run maintenance - network updates, cleaning cache and cookies, running antispyware tests, antivirus tests, power cycling my modem, and removing unused programs.  Do you do this?  It's basic stuff, but sometimes it makes a world of a difference!

WatchMeNow ;Your ISP blocks ping.so does mine.One result you can get is the test below.

This will show a MTU of larger than 1500 will not work without fragmenting.

If it gives you the timed out message with this below then your MTU is 1500

ping -f -l 1472 testmy.net

If you have most DSL the amount to ping with would be 1464 this would show the MTU was 1492.

BTW the l is a small L.
