the only thing really needed at this point is some solid data on the usage of the 100mbps, and some correlation of that with tests perceived as slow. i'm beginning to suspect they occur even before the link reaches full cap, so that would have to be takwen into consideration for any modification of the testing script to balance the load.

i guess this isn't just me. every time a page on the forum is opened, a fragging hoopload of .gifs get dl'ed. the buttons, the smilies, widgets, dingbats and whatnots.

one way to reduce server load might be to take all that <fluff> and host it offsite?

meaning i open the page, and all the images get pulled from somewhere else. with the number of posts and reads, that would make up quite a few saved file transfers. and all those little niggling things do add up.

Yea probably would work but don't know if cable guy has more than one server!!! Also has anyone else notice that it seems that when the pages come up they seem to come up slower than before? I have no idea why cable said it was faster but all I noticed was the slow downs on forum page loads!

:) There is a place for individual users to turn off Sig's and something else I believe, and by doing this it will help speed up page loading, this may depend on the connection a person has..... but I'll try and find the exact place where this is done. I'm sure this would help speed anyone but especially 56k users. I haven't noticed slower page loads but it is something that can be looked at.

All the 'fluff' you speak of is very small, and once loaded once should then be cached.  Most of the images and such are VERY small in size and don't stress the server when loaded.  There are a total of 228 images (minus the smilies and avatars) that make up this entire forum.. alot of which are rarely seen, and they are ALL in total of only 100KB.  I personally have a very quick access time with this new forum "Page created in 0.446 seconds with 11 queries." "Page created in 0.32 seconds with 20 queries." "Page created in 0.629 seconds with 20 queries." -- hell, run a google query on "testmy.net" and it will output "Results 1 - 10 of about 10,800 for "testmy.net". (0.54 seconds)".

Thank you for the suggestion... as for connection speed, I am researching the slow downs...

I just made some changes to Apache, we will see if the changes will speed up things around here.  I did notice a couple of erors in my http.conf that may have to do with it.

I am in no means the once to benchmark this right now, my connection is running slow everywhere right now.

Let me know if you all notice any difference durring peak hours.

Bottom Line:: 67 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.23 second(s)

but the average is the same as before

i will test later and see if its any diff with 200 users on site

also i wonder what will happen if i test at the very same time someone on a backbone testing

like this Odysseus_____  guy office connection is 4 multiplexed DS3's

and posted scores like this

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 89659 Kbps about 89.7 Mbps (tested with 12160 KB)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=5TMS1XUAO [testmy.net] [testmy.net]

if the Testserver is limited to 100 Mbps, then its not much left when these guys testing

so i would suggest a test cap of 12 Mbps or so, no one got more then that at home anyways

If we limit it to 12 mbps , when this guy with the fancy dancy connection comes to test ( like he REALY needs to know if its still fast  ) that would take ALL of the 12 mbps and wed be stuck with a non accessable anything lol

i think the server can handle 12 Mbps, but it cant handle backbone speeds like Odysseus_____  has......

that can be one of the problems with the slowdowns

for testing backbones, the testserver should have access to 10 Gbps

my idea was less to limit a certain test to a certain speed, but to not let a new test start unless there was at least say 10mbps available. if the server is under load, and mister fancy schmancy hookup decides to run a test, well, he's sol.

the way i see it is that this thing is for the masses and not for corporations to see if their provider is providing them with the full bandwidth. you don't see a user called aohell_admin testing the link from his dallas access point here, do you?

to provide that kind of speed i think CA3LE would have to kick every other customer at his hosters site and take /all/ the 12 gigs it has. and that might be a tad expensive, no?

I emailed theplant (put in a ticket)

It seems to be routing, and must just get worse durring internet rush hour.

Attached is a screenshot of a downloaded file from TestMy.net (with the route to my house.. yours may be different) and a download from Sin0cide.com hosted on my same server.  As you can see although sin0cide.com is on the same server it has a different route and is running HELLA slow (same file, same time).

(the speed from TestMy.net is a healthy burst, my actual line speed isn't that fast... I wish... it's a fluke, happens every now and then to me...  The point is that I max my connection out.)

From my host, in response to my support ticket.

(jerickson-01/14/05-14:19):

RFO: 1-17-2005 Network Performance Degradation

This morning at approximately 10:10am CST a link failure between DLLSTX3 and DLLSTX2 began causing performance degradation across portions of The Planet's network. Intermittent latency was experienced by some customers for varying periods of time during the network condition. Upon notification of the link failure, The Planet's Network Engineers were on hand to determine the point of failure and correct the issue. Network conditions were restored to normal at approximately 1:45pm CST, and the link will continue to be monitored for detection of any possible future problems.

Future Mitigation: The Network Engineering department will be reviewing this incident to determine the source of the failure, and should the issue require further repair notification will be made 48 hours in advance of any scheduled maintenance windows.

Thanks for your patience.

hm, since this wasn't just a problem today, i think i will translate it.

well, our network got overloaded. our engineers were all busy with one thumb up their ass and the other in their mouth playing switch.

lucky for us the network load went down a little in the afternoon so we could say we were back to normal operational status.

meanwhile the management is debating wether or not to schedule shutdowns so they can call it maintenance, buying them another few days in which to be dazzled by all the purty blinking collision leds on the backbone's switches.

have a nice day.
