New Phone/PDA

Well, I lost my old cell. It was a Motorola flip phone, nothing special. So I decided to get a new phone:

Palm Treo 650. The model is a few months old, but I got a good deal. The Treo 700 came out recently, with additional features. I considered going for the 700, but I though I'd try this one first. I have 30 days to decide if I like it.

I have just a couple of questions, for anyone who knows:

  • is it better to go with the Palm OS, or the Windows Mobile OS, and what are the benefits of each?
  • is there any way to get IM apps (ie. AIM, MSN, etc.) on it?
  • what is the best way/place to get apps for the Palm (preferably without spending anything)

Looks nice. I myself purchased a new PDA/Smart phone, I got the Motorola Q a couple day's ago.  I wouldn't know which would be better from the Palm OS and WM OS, since this is my first PDA/ Smart phone. But the Motorola Q runs on Windows Mobile 5.0, which for now do like how it functions. The only IM app that it should have I think is MSN Messenger and MSN Hotmail, I think for the Palm Treo you have to buy AIM (check on http://mobile1.aol.com )...  you can get Yahoo Messenger for free, I was able too but with Yahoo you have to use the internet so theirs the downer (at-least for me ). Their is free apps (rarely) you can get but have to find them but they all mostly cost money (which in my opinion sucks).

Here is my cell phone:

Nice.  I was looking at the Q.  Very sharp.

I think I found a decent free AIM for Palm: http://info.aol.co.uk/aim/palm/

It's free so far.  Having a bit of trouble getting it to import my buddy list, but that's alright cause it would just be for incoming IM's anyway.  I tried a couple of other free software, but this one seems to be stable (had to hard reset and re-sync the palm after one install!).  It seems like there is a good amount of free apps out there...just need to sort through the proprietary stuff, some of which is not cheap at all.

Good, to hear that.  :cheesy: All I got to do is get a miniSD, since I cant add many things to the cell phones memory (which is only 54Mb).

The Windows OS looks pretty slick, but if it's anything like other MS products, it would be a resource hog, and one of the things I really need is good battery life.  Why do you recommend the Windows OS over Palm (ie. functionality/user friendly/compatability)?

Have you found any decent reviews or comparisons between the two?

Nice.  The 650 ha 32 MB storage, 312MHz Intel processor, SD/MultiMediaCard/SDIO expansion, Bluetooth, etc.  The Treo 700wx has the Windows OS and 128 MB storage.  For like another $100, do you think it's worth it?  I'm seriously considering it....

Both are great looking phones...

As far as the OS of the phone I would say that Windows Mobile is more geared toward the multimedia side of things where as Palm is more for a business user who doesnt need all the little gadgets.

I found this place.. http://www.freewarepalm.com/  They seem to have a pretty good selection of apps and also pop-ups..  So it is atleast a start.

As far as instant messaging software.. http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html give that a try.. it is basically trillian for Palm.

Also for more information on the phones www.phonescoop.com and look up the make/model.  I don't think you can windows apps on the TREO because its Palm (used to work for cell phone insurance) but I like the window apps myself because I have 7 Windows computers and its easier to sync and what not.  My uncle has a Palm OS device and has had constant trouble sync'ing in Windows.  My preference is like the Audiovox PDA phones.  Hope that link helps

Well i caved and picked up the Palm Treo 700wx with Windows.  It's a great phone, but then again so was the last one.  I like the Windows, but for the extra $$$ i'm not totally convinced it's that much better.  Looking around the net, it seems there is more free software geared towards the Palm OS.  In comparison, this one has Windows Media Player, the other had RealPlayer.  This one has MSN Messenger, the other had AIM.  This one has hotmail, the other had gmail.  They both have MS Office.  I mean, yeah Windows is pretty.... but.... $$$$ ....and Palm is just as functional.  I think I may go back to Palm OS.

Yeah, its all a matter of preference, they have the same functions/features just depends on what you want with the phone.  Myself..I'd be happy with a phone that didn't power cycle 10 times a day  :haha:

I think Storm hit it right on the head... it all comes down to what features you want and what you are really comfortable with at the time of purchace.

My dad has the Cingular 8125  with Windows Mobile and likes it a lot!  The only thing that I can see that really is a down side it the hardware requirements to run Windows might lead to poor batter life.  Either way I am sure that you will enjoy the smart device.
