EVDO-A vs Hughesnet/ WildBlue

simpleman

Recommended Posts

Just ordered EVDO-A. Cancelling mt Hughesnet order. Save the 300 upfront since I just have to pay 59.99 a month and no equipment to buy( PX500 card is free after instant rebate). VSAT technician recommended EVDO over staellite for on line gaming purposes. In the next few days I will report back. In the meanwhile can someone else enlighten me on how their on line gaming works with EVDO-A.

TIA

Is it truly running the Revision A today?

I have straight EVDO ( 1st Gen ) and get 200-400ms ping times on average.

I hear that revision A is supposed to be better, but I did not think it was active anywhere yet.

Either way, EVDO anything should be better than satellite for gaming purposes anyways.

For the heck of it, I fired up the laptop and ran a ping testt.

The times are better than I recall they usually were:

Those are decent ping rates. I am not sure if rev A is available. On the phone I was told it will be rev A but, she absolutly did not know what she was talking about technically. I asked if I could route to my other PC and she said no and that I would have to have two cards and two accounts. When there website clearly states that the merlin s720 is usable with the linksy router.

http://powervision.sprint.com/mobilebroadband/devices/S720card.html

I'm trying to get this for two desktops. If you could enlighten me on which card and how to route to my other pc it would be helpful.

Answer to Tommie is PCI to PCMCIA adaptor.

Actually, tommie, it is a PCMCIA card.

simpleman is getting the PX500 card: http://www.evdoinfo.com/images/stories/PX500.jpg

I have a Novatel Merlin S720 in my work laptop: http://powervision.sprint.com/mobilebroadband/devices/S720card.html

The links have photos.

And also, welcome to the forum simpleman, I did not notice the post number 1 thing until tommie reminded me.

I guarantee that there is a way to route them, hopefully without the expensive wi-fi sharing boxes out there.

Although, that Linksys box is not too horribly expensive.

When the wi-fi sharing routers fist came out, they were like 600 dollars and higher.

Here is one way thru windows: http://www.evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Windows_Sharing_EVDO_2005021759/

Any one else having any ideas?

I don't share my EVDO connection, I use it for work and have a cable modem at home.

That is correct. PX500 plus pci to pcmcia adaptor so it will work on my desktop since it has pci slots.

Although I'm curious if there is an advantage to the Merlin card over the PX500.

I called back and the operator told me EVDO rev A won't be available for a couple more months. He also said both cards can be routed.

Appreciate the welcome

Sprint's EVDO System

Adverages 800K Baud A Sec Download

200-420K Baud A Sec Upload

as I can state this from hands on experence...

I'm been using Sprint's Unlimited Data System ($62.00 monthly fee)

in Sin City (Las Vegas Nevada) for multiple months....

I have to say it is very useable.

Have used AT&T/Cingular Data via USB cable with a Moto Razor V3 Phone

but data was slow 120 to 200K baud

.

I have also used a few times, the data connect that

Verizon Wireless has, and it too is not as fast

Have not had hands on with T-Mobile .......

Heads Up >>>>>>>>

For the Novatel PCICMA Card S620 their is a update for Sprint's EVDO(rev a)

Again I have hands on tested multiple cellular data providers

and EVDO from Sprint/Nextel is very useable and good data rates

is the most useable

See this Url http://www.thewirelessreport.com/2007/01/26/wireless-data-speeds-who-is-the-fastest/

it verifys my hands on experence and other info

So I could possibly do this also then. I will have to check with verizon.  :grin2:

If you have the service in your area, then yes.

I drive all over the city where I live daily while working, and I rarely loose the connection.

It is pretty stable.

BTW, you should also check the other carriers, but I believe Verizon and Sprint/Nextel are the two biggest EVDO carriers.

Both are available in Omaha, NE,  where I live.

I just reupped my contract and got a new phone with them. So it would have to be with Verizon. Which is ok, I like them so far.  :grin2:

What is the U/L like??

Posted this test result earlier.

Good point, something for simpleman to keep in mind.

And, tommie, I would assume that there is a contract requirement with Verizon, there is with Sprint.

And the support? I have never had a problem, so never needed to call anyone, been around 2 years now.

I don't test speeds on it much, but I do occasionally get into and area that seems to be a little busy, or saturated.

Remember this speed test was done by a PDA/Smartphone not a wireless card. But I think its the same speeds you might get in a wireless card... hopefully. :D

Their is a CONFLICT

Make sure you can return the adaptor card if this fact happens to you

And, tommie, others,

I would assume that there is a contract requirement with all the providers, there is with Sprint.

1 Year Contract and $62.00 Monthly

And the support with Sprint?

I have had a problem, ping loss at step 2

and support from Sprint was ok if you could get a past the 1st level

and to the 2nd level of tech support

I don't test speeds on it much

Adverage 800K Down 200K Up

I use it all over Sin City and so far no connect problems

Casinos, Bars, In Car on I-15 & Local Streets, Home , Office , All Over Sin City -- Las Vegas

I Quote from below url ::

Cingular and T-Mobile both offer EDGE  (no HSDPA yet)

Alltel and Sprint Nextel offer EV-DO

http://www.thewirelessreport.com/2007/01/26/wireless-data-speeds-who-is-the-fastest/

Well thats my 2 cents

Good Luck and Enjoy
