Could it get any worse?

Sorry for reposting this, I just posted this in response to a direcway question in another category. I thought I might post it here too, in its proper place. Please forgive my newbieness.  :?

I've been with DirecWay for over a year now and have never been satisfied. While my download speeds are pretty good ranging from 300k to 700k per sec, its virtualy impossible for me to upload anything at all. Its so slow a simple http request takes anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds depending on the time of day. In the past 48 hours I've spent 8 hours on the phone with tech support and now I'm waiting on a call from a DirecWay engineer. This is my second system on D'way runing XP and i get the same results, so i know my system is not to blame here, not to mention the fact dial up is faster.  Here's today's mytest.net upload analysis. And before you ask... No, I'm not under a FAP, I've only been Fapped twice in a year.

D'way 4000

Signal strength 82

Software version 4.2.1.10

Connection is:: 6 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)

Upload Speed is:: 1 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ [www.testmy.net]

Bottom Line:: 0 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 1024 second(s)

If anyone has any ideas about why this is happening, feel free to post them. I'd enjoy some speed before I change over to ISDN next month.

Uploads for DirecWay suck big time! What are you getting for download speeds? For uploading dial-up beats DirecWay ALL to heck, as they have it limited so badly. I am on the DW6000 and lately towrads evening my downloads look almost as bad as your uploads. Here's my upload speed right now:

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 22 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 KB)

Upload Speed is:: 3 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 0 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 341.33 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=OAUZTI0CF

And around 7 p.m. Eastern my downloads look like this:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 86 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)

Download Speed is:: 11 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 2 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 93.09 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=YE9NPMZIK

I have talked to Tech Support Level 3 so much I think they would like to chock me, but this is crazy the speeds we are not getting. They are having problem's at the NOC so they say, just hope they fix all of it soon for us all. That's not alot of help for you I know, but that's about all I know right now.

Glad to know I'm not the only one!  Heres my download speeds.

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 1258 Kbps about 1.3 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)

Download Speed is:: 154 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 22 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 6.65 second(s)

Seems odd to me I have this great download speed and horrible upload speed.

The advanced level tech yesterday had me bypass the proxy to see if that helped... I did it, then chuckled as I told him I doubt a proxy has anything to do with uploading.. He went on to blame my computer, my software etc.. Tightened him up when I told him I had another system with a fresh install I'd be glad to put online just to see..

Thanks for the reply!

Yes I hear that story all the time, has to be your computer. But after they did ALL this checking on my computer, guess what??? It's them!!! Whatever you do, DO NOT upgrade to the DW6000, as it is far worse than the speeds I got on my DW4000. I just did a speed check on mine, and this is why I have been complaing to Tech Support so much:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 248 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)

Download Speed is:: 30 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 4 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 34.13 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=YUWFTVCI4

Now in the morning hours I run like this:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 1253 Kbps about 1.3 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)

Download Speed is:: 153 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 22 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 6.69 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=93WVROKL4

My point is, how are they contoling my DW6000? Hmmmmm they have to be and with the 4000 they couldn't, so whatever you do, stay with the 4000 until you HAVE no choice but to upgrade. I call these speeds the DirecWay shaft. lol Engineering has been calling me for 2 weeks now to fix mine, ya right. Still waiting and running crappy.

YooperLady hows your upload speed? I wouldn't think they're controlling your download speeds, its just network traffic slowing things down. I'd be happy wih 64kbs up and down.

Another interesting note, if I run thier upload test from thier site, it says 93kbps. The tech yesterday said well looks good, you should be surfing at a good speed. I let him know real quick I KNOW that thier test is terribly inaccurate, I have a speed monitor and I watch it all the time. If I had 93kbps I'd be able to attatch a simple jpeg quicker than the 10 minutes it takes me. Can't even upload to direcway's email server? It's rediculous. How I'd love to be able to send my family pictures via yahoo messanger, but of course that doesn't work.

Don't worry about Direcway getting any more money out of me, I'll have ISDN Feb. 11th. (128k up, 128k down) If that doesn't pan out, I'll be on dial up, at least then I can do something as simple as sharing a photo with family living out of state, and save a ton of money doing it.

No cable, No DSL, and my best dial up connection is 26.4    I'm tucked away 8 miles back into a wildlife management area.

VERY lucky to get ISDN, that I ordered today.  WOOHOO!

In another post a fellow suggested my dish could be out of alignment, could that be the case eventhough I have good signal strength? Seems ot me if that were the case D'way's techs would have checked that, or said something about it..  And if not, just another reason to drop this and go with ISDN, afterall, I only wasted 8 hours of my time on the phone with them... I'd be pretty PO'ed about an oversight like that.

Direcvictim, my uploads are BAD, look at my first post, only 20Kbps or 3KBS not good at all!!!

bigdaddy51: If you are getting fairly stable rates, stay with the 4000, the 6000 too many people are having the same problem I am. I'm not sure if they will let me go back to the 4000, but if this is better by next week, they will either let me or they can shove this you know where. lol My only other choice here is dial-up at 49.0 kbs, but right now that's not looking bad. At least on dial-up they don't fap you if you download. lol

Update on my situation.  Today I visited - http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/2019

I downloaded Dr TCP and made the tweaks. While its by no means uploading as it should,

Its improved enough that I'm getting better performance

Well, I copied the adress and lost my upload test results. grrr

Anyway, I've gone from 1kbps upload to 5kbps upload.

Hope this helps others who are having trouble with upload speeds.

You DEFINITELY have something wrong, and I'm betting that your dish isn't properly aligned. When my dish went out of alignment ,it acted the same way. My set up was still under guarantee though, so all I had to do was get the installer back there. What sat are you going to? BD51

and that's in a blizzard with only 68 for signal strength. 1230mhz a 99degrees and a 4000 modem. BD51

[glow=red,2,300]DW4000[/glow] is all different league....thats why some tweaks are not for the DW6000. There are people using DW4000 tweaked up with speeds well over 2000kbps on average. Look in the cooperhead website there is info in there about the two different systems. Do a little research on or talk to those who have a 4000 tweaked up they are faster by far than a 6000 modem.

I am disabled, and I rarely have anything large to upload, so I never even noticed much,. that there was a problem. As long as I can download wicked fast, I am happy as it's nice for upgrading customers boxes and other stuff. Just a few of Revs tips helped a lot, along with other tips offered elsewhere, to speed up Firefox. It's hard to know where to draw the line, and I'd rather have slower speeds and more safety.I am online quite a few hours a day, so browser speed is important to me. I pull maintenence almost every day ,and defrag 2 or 3 times a week ,as well as run Norton at least once a week.All this helps keep my rig fast, I AM thinking about giving Cox one more chance, but I WILL keep a paper trail record of every payment ,and E-mail sent to them, as they are notorious for double billing, and not crediting your payments.It was the main reason for going to the Sat in the first place. THere really isn't much of a difference in price, but with cable, I can join Yahoo's games on demand program. Unlimited game play, for as little as $12 amonth. Some pretty good titles too. Cable here is $49.95 +tax around $53. I have to look at what thier offer is now,before I decide to change back. When I had it, it was down more than it was up, but that was almost 3 years ago, and I've asked friends who have it now ,and they say they don't have that problem anymore.  I'll still keep the Sat ,as I can never even get 1/2 of what it cost me back then,roughly around $600.
