cable tweaking help

Rex Orbis2

Recommended Posts

Cable finally came to my area recently, and I want to get the most out of it that I can.  I know I don't have any serious problems,  but that doesn't mean it can't get a little better.

1.  Windows XP Professional with SP2 integrated

2.  Adelphia PowerLink,  3000kbps/256kbps

3.  Currently have Cablenut with VanBuren's  v3 3000/256 tweaks installed.  I have numbers for without the tweaks as well as with.

(No tweaks)

http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:4db3f03?service=cable&speed=3000&os=winXP&via=normal

(3000/256 tweaks)

http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:27545ea?service=cable&speed=3000&os=winXP&via=normal

4. With no tweaks

hey Jeff and welcome to the forum :)

if you connect your pc direct to the modem, leave the duplex setting at default usally works very well.

however you can try to force 10 Mbps halfduplex

quote from http://dslnuts.com/tips_tricks.shtml

"Windows 2000 or XP: to change to half-duplex:

* Open Control Panel.

* Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

* Identify the icon for your cable modem connection: usually Local Area Connection.

* Right-click that icon and select Properties.

* Under the ethernet adapter icon, click the button Configure.

* Click the tab Advanced to bring it to the front:

* In the Property box, the property name to be selected varies according to model of ethernet card. Examples are: Network Link Selection, Media Type, Connection Type, Duplex Mode, or any similarly-named property which can have Values looking like Auto-Negotiation, or 10BT, or 10BaseT.

* In the Value box, select a value which either (a) explicitly says half-duplex or semi-duplex, or (B) at least does not say full-duplex [e.g. 10BaseT on its own is OK]. If there is a choice between 10 and 100 with half-duplex, choose the 10. Do not choose 10Base5, 10Base2, or AUI.

* Click OK to exit the Adapter settings.

* Click OK to exit the Connection properties. "

downloa dthis file i attach and unzip it to C:ProgramCablenut

now open cablenut adjuster, click delete cablenut tweaks and click save to registry

in top left corner click file, click load custom setting, browse to C:ProgramCablenut and dubbleclick on the file you unzipped

now click save to registry and reboot, also reboot your modem and router for 30 seconds

make speedtest and that Nitro test, copy all text you find including more info and make a new post

you have some re transmissions

quote "Web100 reports the Round trip time = 175.23 msec; the Packet size = 1460 Bytes; and

There were 18 packets retransmitted, 466 duplicate acks received, and 87 SACK blocks received"

you need to finetune TcpWindowSize and GlobalMaxTcpWindowsize

check this post how to do...

https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1989.msg19795#msg19795

your MSS is 1460

your Bandwidth is 3 Mbps = 375 KB/s

try diffrent latency i would suggest to go lower and see if the re transmissions in Nitrotest decrease

the tweakfile using 250 ms but i would suggest 220 ms  first

I've found that most pings between 160 and 220 give very similar results, although at 180 things run smoother so I'll just leave it at that right now.  Its more stable and I upload faster now,, which is great.  Still drop 18 packets, but that's all the lower it seems to go.  Thanks a lot.

One more thing that I didn't do.  I didn't give the detailed stats from the nitro test with no tweaks, so this is is.  No packet loss, but I don't know how to fix the ordering and the receive buffer.
