Cox Omaha, NE = terrible

Every night around 5:30 or so when people around here start getting home from work, and they feel like going on the internet I suffere a HUGE loss of speeds. This continues until people start to get themselves in bed and off the **** internet (around 10:30 pm). My normal connect speed is around 1000 KB/s download...... but hey not during prime time hours. Here is what I'm getting right now at 7:44 pm.

Yep, advertised speeds are 7 Mb. So basically I start to try and play some online gaming and notice that my ping times are 100+ in every server. So today I was playing and I made a nice new talking bind, "Prime Time is lag time for Cox Communications!"

So basically this is all leading up to me saying....... **** COX COMMUNICATIONS

Guess I should call em, but I'm leaving for College in a week so it seems almost like a waste, but I guess I could help my dad out and get him the speed he is paying for.

Hi

I just moved to omaha. I have bought the premier package 12mpbs and I see the speed does not go more then 6Mbps. Called them and they say thats speed  testing websites jump to a different server, so they cannot support the speed test websites.

I dont understnad this! What should I do?

so basically they said they wasn't anything wrong with ur connection and their not doing anything to fix it?

What's your modem's rx:/tx: levels?  You'll find them on the diag page 192.168.100.1

modem brand/model and how long have you had it?

I've looked through everything on their twice and haven't seen anything that mentions the rx or tx levels. We have probably had our modem for about...4 or 5 years (maybe more i can't really remember). It's a Motorola SB5100.

I was looking at the Log and it shows quite a few error, dunno if this is normal. Here are a the most recent log posts.

It actually says Downstream and Upstream power, not TX and RX (which is how we people who work on HFC systems usually refer to the levels).

edit: A quick note - by TX and RX, we mean Transmit (upstream) and Receive (downstream), respectively.

It doesn't mean TEXAS and DRUGS ( Shug........  :nono: )

and my signal to noise ratio is 36 dB.

Any changes needed?

You are a little on the outside edges of both downstream and upstream levels, peeps.

Now it is a lot cooler today than it has been in weeks here in Omaha.

Your receive level was almost certainly at least 3-5dB lower yesterday than it is now; which would have put it below minimum good inputs.

Are your problems occurring during the heat of the day generally (late afternoon)?

problems occuring pretty much every day from 5 pm till around 10 pm.

How do I change those values, and what should I change them to?

First thing that strikes my interest is the borderline levels. Sorry about using the terms rx.tx. From here on, we'll use them anyway.

The levels for modems to operate optimally:  Rx: -8dBmV to +5db  tx: 40db -50db.

You're borderline on your levels it seems. Possibly a bad splitter @ the dmarc (outside the home) or if you have an attic, it could be there too. Splitters do go bad. They're just pieces of potmetal, and you don't have to go to extremes (going to Radio Shack and getting the gold 'bling'). It is what it is. You can get the splitters free @ the digital store. Grab a 12mm and start swapping out the splitters! You also may consider not connecting the ao's (outlets) that you don't use. (i.e. 4 way split down to 3 way split instead...) it will free up the rx and lower the tx as well.

2nd, it could be your modem. You've noted above the error log

If you have many of these, t3/t4 errors, the modem isn't negotiating the TimeOf Day, TFTP, and other basic functions. It could be time for a new modem.

3rd, if your levels are fluctuating from

5 pm till around 10 pm.
dn0 could be exactly right. If the coax on the side of your home is 'house-wrapped' and the shielding is cracking, you could be losing signal, as well as the coax (copper) expands and contracts with the heat.

Just like a car, it's got to be fine tuned. I'd say worry about tweaking your cpu last.

damnnnnnn, thanxs for all the information. I guess I never realized that the actualy hardware stuff could affect it so much. Being my ignorant self, I always just thought the cable going to your house was either good and your internet worked, or it was bad and your internet would have problems. Never realized splitters and stuff could affect my internet like that. I guess I'll just leave it alone for now, unless it gets worst.
