Hello guys... I wanna know which one is more accurate during testing of broadband speed... coz i notice a significant drop on my bandwidth test results if there's no firewall running on my system. Please include detailed explaination of why firewall software affects bandwidth testing. thanks in advance!  :smile2:

BTW: im using Kaspersky Internet Security 7

Edit by RTB: titles in all caps just screams rudeness at me. I'd prefer if you didn't do it again.

umm, i'm not sure about this, but firewalls and other security programs tend to reduce your speed, since they conduct realtime scanning of data transferred to and from your computer.

yeah strict firewall filthering systems will slow down down speeds. got my firewall disabled recently. not much changed with speed but its more on stability.

hi im using the basic winxp firewall only. should i get it off at all times so i can get more stable or faster speed? by the way, what anti-virus program can you suggest for me to use? because im confused with which one is really better. please help me thanks in advance.

how about the three more options for tweaking smbro (disable DNS caching, faster page loading, increase buffer) are these really work? please give some advices so i wont ruin my registry. sorry for too many questions.

about your firewall, it depends on you. if you want to be secure, leave it on. if you want to sacrifice security for speed, turn it off.

anti-virus, you will get a lot of mixed opinions here. i prefer AVG, since avast! did things that i didn't like in the past, like scanning something as malware when it really isn't. but other people here will recommend avast!. easiest way is to try them all, and pick one according to your preference.

about those DNS caching, faster page loading stuff, i'm not sure, since i don't use those tweaks myself, but still satisfied with my speed. again, best way is to try things out, and if they don't workout, then simply restore your system the way it is.

and on the firewall thingy!!!

if you are a good boy and does not go to sites that obviously has viruses like those websites with cracks, keygen and porn! and if you don't do online purchases and online banking.. plus you don't have personal data that when hacked would mean the end of your life...

Yes, you could turn it off.. it is most likely that hackers won't be after you at all.  hehehe

@FB

its year 2008 leave the old habits behind, hehehe  :grin:

beside you could always get a DVD (US$ 2.44) or VCD (US$ 1.22)  of porn, it is so much cheap in Quiapo and MM sidewalks.. hahaha! (oh, I just knew the price because i was told to..by someone who happens to be a porn addict..  :azn:) plus it is safer (for your pc) that way...

that is if you don't mind the eyes of the passerby staring at you buying some porn movies.. hahaha  :evil6:  :haha:

Thats RTB, he comes off as a lil ol cranky guy but hes a cool shit. Keeps it clean here.  :grin2:

You are correct, fiewalls, virus scanners and the like will all reduce your speed test if it's scanning the data as it enters.. most notorious are Avast and Zone Alarm.

Chris
