I have set my stats compiler to sleep if server load gets too high, this was most likely the cause. Stats were compiling once a day.... and with the increase in traffic around here it's not a small task to compile an Apache log into something readable. It will now run 4 times a day and sleep if server load gets too high.. this should cut the work load up. :::..
