Dreadful connection speed!

Hi all,

My so called DSL broadband speed is 129kbps on both my computers. Yep, you read that right - 129kbps. Not long ago it was as reasonable 2000. I have run Registry Mechanic, System Optimizer, PC Optimizer, deleted cookies, past history etc etc. Nothing has helped. My XP computer which is connected by a short cable to a Vigor router and my Vista computer connected by a longer ethernet cable both give the same pathetic results. Here are the figures.

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Download Connection is:: 129 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 512 kB)

Download Speed is:: 16 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Main)

Test Time:: 2008/12/10 - 2:59pm

Bottom Line:: 2X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 64 sec

Tested from a 512 kB file and took 32.404 seconds to complete

Download Diagnosis:: May need help : running at only 8.9 % of your hosts average (as9105.com)

User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4 [!]

Help, please!!!

Gosh, that was a fast reply!

I ran the programme on both computers and tried disconnecting both the landline telephones.

Sadly the result is the same.

Download Connection is:: 128 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 512 kB)

So same speed with both tests.

Any chance you DSL provider has a failed bit of equipment or somehow the system has locked you down at the slow speed?

Or has the speed been dropping over time?

I don't know if your DSL/router would have a speed setting, other than for wireless.

:iamwithstupid: I had DSL for about a year and hated it. At first it was fast as hell. Then it got worse and worse. Then it would hardly work. After tons of calls and 3 techs coming out they figured out it was "water in the line". Call em and complain.

Hi and wellcome Doccy D ,

are you UK based and with Tiscali  ? ,  if so ,can you get your line stats from the router ,?

or test on Tiscali's own UK test page  http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/

and post the results , also what plan are you on ?

Tiscali is not the best ISP but it is cheap ,

BTW, expect to lose about 20% testing across the pond ,

my stats with (as9105.com)

Using the Tiscali site it was 511 -  "Your current bandwidth reading is: 511.10kbps"

Over the weekend I am going to connect using the Homecall router rather than my Draytek Vigor to see if the router settings need adjusting or if the problem is the line. I will post details of my tests.

Hi, Here is some data from the Draytek Vigor router. I hope it helps.

HI Doccy D

just been looking at your router stats , all I can see strange is your Down speed ,

But I aint the brightest pebble on the beach on stats , the only bit I can understand is the

ADSL status ,

Up Speed    Down Speed    SNR Margin    Loop Att.

        448000      2368000              15.5               40.0

----------------------------------------------------------

Up speed        Down speed      SNR                ATN

448000            5362000           10.5                  47.5

by the attenuation  you are closer to the exchange than me with a SNR of 15.5 and a  ATT of 40 ,

you should be seeing around 4-5 Mbps ,

But your down speed is being limited , it might be a stuck profile ,  if you are not on Tiscali's LLU ,it might be the infamous BT profile , it downgrades the line if it gets repeated errors ,   but does come back up after the fault  clears ,although it takes a few days ,

all I can sugest at the moment is

with the router off , pick up the phone dial "0" and listen if you have a quiet line ( no hiss or crackle  )

if that is OK ,  Try swapping filters ,

also can you connect the router into the BT  master socket ? if you have a latter BT socket , it will have 2 screws in the lower section , and it will slide out  along with all the house extension wires ,  this will uncover the BT test socket , and diconnect the extensions , try pluging the router into that and then run a speed test ,

if no improvement  , it's time to call Tiscali ,

as a quickcheck on possible BB speed try  http://www.zen.co.uk/broadband/ZenBroadband.aspx

just enter your  phone number and see what it comes up with  ??? ,

Zen are usualy cautious on their estimate ,mine was a max of 4Mbps , I get  5+ with Tscali

Thanks for that.

The line is quiet with an occasional crackle with the router off. Swapping the filter did not make any difference. Plugging direct into the master socket seemed to solve the problem - the speed shot up to 1900. But that was not sustained. Now it's back down to around 500 even though the cable is connected directly to the master socket. The variability is unpredictable. Is Tiscali congestion the problem? Would switching to, say Fast.co.uk make a big difference?

well on the switching ISP , all I can say is "possibly " , sorry if that sounds a bit vague , but that is the way it is in the UK , indeed fast co.uk has a good reputation , but is expensive ,and  with a download limit ? ,

Tiscali is known to have a lose of speed  in peak times , and for me the hours of darkness slow it some ,

( street lighting etc, ) the worst I get is around 4Mbps at that time ,

back to your curious speed problem , so connecting direct in the BT  master socket it jumped to 1900kb  up from 500 kb

would indicate a internal phone line problem , but as the speed dropped again , it does look like a Tiscali conjestion problem ,  well known unfortunately (over subscribed ) and possibly a conjested exchange ,

and that could apply even if you changed ISP's , and that would be a downer if locked into 1 years contract ,

from your router stats you should manage  1900 -2200kbps ,which is low anyway , and about the same as I was getting a year back on the old BT network before the Tiscali switch to their LLU at the exchange , I suspect you are not on Tiscali LLU , but still running on the old BT network , possibly your exchange has not been converted , ?

but it does seem pot luck in the UK ,  I have a friend on the same Tiscali plan that gets 7.23Mbps 24x7 ,

different exchange though, just using her Tiscali modem , !!!

some good advice on UK adsl  here , http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php  ,

Modem/routers ? I can recommend the Thompson speedtouch 585 v6, it's worth another 1Mbps on my line ,

have you tried talking to Tiscali ?

Regards

Roco
