Questions about my speedtest

GoTo

Recommended Posts

I've done about about 15 tests on this site and I always come up with either 5.2, 5.3 or 5.4 Mbps.

I am with Shaw Cable in Victoria BC and have Extreme-I (15 Mbps download speed) with PowerBoost. I never expected to reach 15 Mbps, but I did expect to be over 10. When I inquired to Shaw about this, they said that it was probably a problem with Testmy and its location and how many hops I had to go through.

They said to go to Speedtest, which I had done, and hit 18 Mbps. However, in that 5 second test, because of PowerBoost I was hitting those numbers when Extreme-I was at 10 Mbps download. The same numbers I'm getting now with 15 Mbps.

How do I check to find out what my true speed is? Is there a way?

Suggestions?

Welcome to testmy.net GoTo

First off, I'm certain there's no problem with this site, what I am fairly certain of, and with a bit of investigating, that other site shows much more then the real speed, I'm not sure why, but they do. Some people claim that is a marketing feature, you know, they show this great speed, makes you feel good, and so you click more . Makes sense in a finical manner (for them), but technically speaking, for the most part, it's incorrect.

I would much rather know what my true speed is.

However , there are people all over the world, in many countries testing here at testmy.net, sure, the further the distance, the more hops, ( or routers) you'll have, the slower the connection, but were talking milliseconds in a correctly configured system. Of course the further the dostance, you'll get into increased "lag time ".

I would first start out with a trace route to testmy.net, there is a utility in the upper section of each page here that allows you to access testmy.net's utilities.  This will give you the information you need to see what path your data is traveling to get to testmy.net from your location, and, if any , what , and where the issue lies. Could be in a switch/ router somewhere along the line. Or a plethora of other problems ranging from incorrectly set registry values within the operating system, to an internal cable mismatch, to "something" within the confines of the operating system such as an open connection allocating bandwidth during normal use.

Go ahead and do a traceroute, and post the results here, while your there, it would be helpful to also complete a ping test to testmy.net as well.

Thanks for the welcome, mudmanc4.

I tried doing a traceroute and this is what I got

Traceroute failed. Host may not be active. Note: Some ISPs don't allow ping and trace to be done on their clients.

Your traceroutes for whre your at look pretty good, as well as consistant.

Maybe start the automatic test here at testmy.net, let that run as many days as you want, it will log all the data for you. Post a few of them here, and we'll see how you do.

The auto test is in the  "misc tools

' drop down menu at the top of the page, I just linked you to it here Just minimise the window the test is running in after you set the specific times per day you want the test to run. You can open a new Explorer window to browse.

i see that this post kind of died on the 13th but here is my 2 cents.

the other speed test site might not be accounting for the fact that you have Powerboost. Powerboost is a feature that some ISPs have (Comcast to the best of my knowledge) to give a burst of speed. This is the explanation directly from the Comcast website -

"Comcast 6Mbps High-Speed Internet with PowerBoost provides a burst of download and upload speed above the customer's provisioned download and upload speeds for the first 10 MB and 5 MB of a file respectively. It then reverts to your provisioned speed for the remainder of the download or upload."

So if the other speed test you are running are only downloading and uploading less then your Powerboost limit your speed might seem faster sometimes even 10Mbits faster (in my case). So to better explain it if they advertise 15Mbps with Powerboost, it most likely means that your real speed is like 8Mbps.

Also your router, your computer settings, your firewall, whether you are wired or wireless - all this factors could be slowing you down.

I would suggest the OP speed test at our site, the other site and then just find a large file to download from download.com or something. See which speed test matches your real world download speed. I am guessing speed test will not be it but I could be wrong. Welcome to the site.  :grin2: :grin2:
