I did call COX and they replaced my modem and did some line tests that were OK and they also did some speed tests to their local server which turned out to be 3.96 meg down and 247 up  (test.lvcm.com)

They said everything was good and that I may be experiencing problems due to network traffic and the distance to testmy.net server.

That's why I came to  you guys....the experts

......I did.  not looking so hot.

1. What OS are you running, ex win 98, win xp, if you have XP make sure you have SP2 installed! Also download the p2p fix for SP2 here https://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497

2. What service do you have, what is the advertised speed for download/upload.

3. What tweakprograms you already got installed, and run this test http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks  copy and paste result URL  adress in your post!

4. What speed do you have against www.testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/  also make a tracert, go to start-run type command and hit enter, type tracert testmy.net and hit enter, right click copy all and paste it in your post.

5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

6. Open Internet Explorer and select tools - internet options - connections -

LAN settings, make sure nothing there is checked.

7. Connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it depend on the ISP service unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

8. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 30 seconds.

9. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot http://beam.to/spybotsd and Ad Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download to remove any spyware

10. ZoneAlarm firewall has known problems with dropping speed, i suggest to uninstall it and compare speed

11. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/

12. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one, AVG is great http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

13. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

14. Download and run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

Yea...my cox.net test (test.lvcm.com) always shows 2+ times faster than anything I ever get at Testmy.net or DSLreports

...anyone have any thoughts.  I did everything Van-B said......Nothing has improved consistently.  My max at testmy.net has been around 2meg download.  I should be getting 4 at peaks

Hi Spooner: First follow Van Burens steps. They usually improve speed.

Next do a trace route to testmy.net to see if there is a long latency at any point or at all points. This will show if there really is a problem to testmy, net I'm betting there isn't,You can send your ISP the results & a copy of the testmy.net test & say why aren't your speeds better. There are a lot of Cox users here and they get close to their cap so you should too.I beleive your ISP will be where you find the problem.Below are mt NDT tests they are usually too fast also .  Cholla

Since I'm on Cox HSI I went to their test site and it's saying that I'm runnin slower than I actually am. I have been coming to testmy.net for a while now and I trust Testmy over their [Cox] test. Here's my results from both places including my upload.  Pretty good difference especially in my upload.  I tested mutiple times at Cox's site and it wasn't stable at all. My speed was all over the place, and getting worse.  :)  So I'll stick with Testmy.net since it's stable and my speed is consistant everytime I test..  :)  Just follow Van Buren and you'll be good to go in no time at all.  :)

your RWIN is way too high Receive Window (RWIN):    4096000

thats for a 30 Mbps connection

download this attached file, unzip it to C:ProgramCablenut

open cablenut adjuster, click delete cablenut tweaks and click save to registry

in top left corner, click file, click load custom settings file, browse to C:ProgramCablenut and dubbleclick on that file you unzipped

now you see values in adjuster, click save to registry and reboot
