sinister666 Posted July 16, 2009 CID Share Posted July 16, 2009 im hoping to get some suggestions and maybe some links from you all about some of the reliable and trust worthy and FREE anti-spyware and anti-virus programs that are out there. im currently only using comodo internet security, i am happy with the firewall end of comodo, but am a bit unsure about the virus protection it offers. recently i have noticed a decline in my computers performance and i fear i may be infected with malware or spyware. ive tried the trend micro housecall, and dont like the slowness of it, i dont enjoy sitting on trends website forever waiting for it to do its thing, i would rather have a program on my computer that is easy to use, reliable and free. ive scanned with comodo, but it comes back clean, but i think its missing something. i dont like trend, i dont like mcafee, and i dont care for avg...do i have any more options when it comes to free protection? and does anyone here use kasperkey? i have a copy of that, but havent tried it yet, i am wondering if its worth trying? thanks in advance guys and girls. destructionfever Posted July 16, 2009 CID Share Posted July 16, 2009 Go with the latest free version of Avira. Also, I recommend you run the free version of Threatfire simultaneously. This is the setup I've used for quite some time and I'm happy with it. I go to this dude's site every so often to see if he recommends anything newer to his subscribers. He tests tons of programs and posts reviews of them on youtube. He also has sections of his blog and youtube videos that show you how to remove the most common malware. The best thing is, most of the good products are free. Back when I went to his site a lot, I came to the conclusion that for preventative measures against threats, the above two programs I listed were best for me. If you suspect you're already infected, dig around his blog a little deeper to get the necessary programs for a house cleaning. Here's the link to his site. And make sure you uncheck 3 pieces of scumware(toolbars). I like ZoneAlarm, but Comodo firewall seems to be ok. And the Windows FireWall, I think, is still mostly one way. Meaning if you get infected, nothing to stop it going back out. And I find Avast anti-virus to be very good, especially when you hit a bad site, it blocks access. starship_troopers Posted July 16, 2009 CID Share Posted July 16, 2009 i still use avg free for antivirus, adaware and spybot and ccleaner for malware, spyware, etc. and firewall...well had zone alarm, and something somehow got by it and disabled it so i just use the router firewall and nothing bad happened since. Roco Posted July 16, 2009 CID Share Posted July 16, 2009 I guess it depends where you surf , but avg free the old sygate firewall superantispyware c-cleaner Procces explorer ( just to check whats running ) the odd run with Hi -jack this and a monthly ASR back up, ( and keeping the original ASR (after a clean install ) on disk , well. sinister666 Posted July 23, 2009 Author CID Share Posted July 23, 2009 well i know i started this thread asking for advice on free virus protection and such, but a couple of you mentioned ESET NOD32, so i started looking into it, it sounded cool, got my attention. even tho it aint free...so i broke down and now im using ESET ver 4 Smart Security, and i must say, im impressed! i never thought i could actually be excited about virus protection and firewall programs, but, well, this one got me excited! plus it has a way cool looking tray icon...lol...so thanks to those that mentioned it, i would have never known about it if you hadnt brought it up. im geeked over it, really nice, easy to use, great looking software. thanks guys!
