slow download speed

Recommended Posts

hi everyone, hoping for some advice.  I'm with Shaw cable.  My internet connection is slow so I used this website to do a download speed test.  The result was 18% of Shaw average.  I called Shaw, told them what the problem was.  They directed me to two different web sites for speed test.  Both showed normal average speed.  The websites Shaw uses are...  <snip> and speakeasy.net.  My internet connection is indeed slow and xbox 360 live can not be played as a result.  Not sure what my next step should be since Shaw disagrees with me.

Hmm, sounds like your ISP knows which sites give false readings.  If I were you, I know which site I would be apt to believe, especially since you know there is a serious problem  to begin with, or you wouldn't have started looking for answers . Stay one your ISP about it !!!!!!!

With Shaw, they do tend to oversell nodes. An easy test is to do a speed test, too check at 8am and then 2pm and then 8pm.

Also what is your package speed? Since the testmy.net speed test says that more people are faster than you.

You can put your speed test from this site in a post. Copy and paste the code on the testing page.

But if you are so slow, sometimes it can be as simple as a line splitter somewhere in the house. Since you also say your gaming machine has a bad connection.

A tracert may also show major lag times on the hop to here or there.

Thanks for the quick reply..  so I've been testing about every 3 to 5 minutes.  the results are from 18% to 50% of Shaw's average.  Tomorrow I will test at 8am, 2pm, and 8pm as advised and will post results..  What do you mean by package speed? and can you get it from info pasted above?

so again, thanks for advice. Love this website..  and, like others have said ...I can spend hours reading and learning....

Whats Shaw selling you for speeds? An example of   Package of 5Mbps with a burst to 8Mbps? Etc...

Power boost is a pain for speed tests. And thats why there is the choice of a larger speed test here to insure accuracy. And depending on available bandwidth on your node, the power boost may not last long, and can skew a speed test.

That was gonna be my question. Whats the speed package, as all of shaw is lumped into the same speed as far as average goes. Like DSL with 768, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, etc... will all  be given the same speed average to be compared to.

So of course a 768 light will always be way below average, and 6.0 will always be over on average.  [geek-small]

So here is my speed test today to compare on how the percentage of speed compared to other users, is based on how many users of an ISP do speed tests here.

The Telus upgrade to 6Mbps speeds has been going on since at least 6 months ago. So I am better than the rest on many test sites. Telus also now has turbo speeds, which is 15Mbps(13Mbps actual with overhead). But that is for people who are near fiber.

I use the 12MB test for accuracy on my connection speed.

OK, so I just got off the phone with Shaw...  speed package is...  extreme service, 15 mbs down and 1 mbs up.

zalternet,  you may be on to something when guessing about line splitter.  I live in a 4plex..  my neighbor is with Telus.  So Telus was here 3 days ago fooling around with an octopus of cables and splitters on the outside of my building.  Seems my connection has been lagging since.  So tomorrow morning I will be replacing the cable going to my computer modem (as per requested by Shaw, although I think it's a waste of time). If that doesn't help with my speed they will arrange for a tech person to come over and see what's going on.

:haha: "octopus of cables "  , would that be " octopi " of cables  :haha: :haha:  Remember, generally, the cable going to the modem, usually, not always depending on the splitter,  comes off of the end, where there's a straight line, or just one port. But if it's that bad, who knows lol

On one of my old places with Satellite TV, I needed a splitter(dish had single output) and I had an old one. Problem was it caused both units(TV receivers) signal to partly degrade in strength. So I cut the guts out and put in two 18 gage wire in a pig tail and soldered them in. And then no more problem with the splitter and signal.   [nerdly]

I read somewhere where the cable guys like to cut up phone lines when the customer gets VOIP. Have not heard of any Oooops from the Phone company in that manner. Unless a connection got loose, kinda....

Don't let that stuff get to you, I know, better said then done, most of us here have been in that same position. Just go through whatever you gotta , so you can get the most out of your connection. Nothing good comes easy. Even when you've already paid for it.
