Horribly slow download and surfing speeds!

Hello everyone. This is my first post here, so I apologize for any "noobishness" that may come from me. Alright: so I got my computer back from repair a couple days ago, and I've noticed that my downloading and surfing speeds are horrendous! This is a fresh install of Vista, I might add. Before I sent my computer in for repair, my download speeds were much, MUCH faster. Also, I am unable to connect directly to the router as I am on wireless. I'm not sure what my advertised speeds are, but I'm running on RoadRunner Cable internet. Here are my results:

:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::

Download Connection is:: 818 Kbps about 0.82 Mbps (tested with 1024 kB)

Download Speed is:: 100 kB/s

Upload Connection is:: 360 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)

Upload Speed is:: 44 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Main)

Test Time:: 2009/08/29 - 7:07pm

D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-2ECJ7HYA3

U-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-XY9TIA3LF

User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US) AppleWebKit/530.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/2.0.172.43 Safari/530.5 [!]

Thanks for the help in advance!

I see, she has a VPN set up in there, so she can access the servers from home. Like you said, unless your familiar w/ how to tunnel a secured sever connection, and know her server settings and passwords, thats not such a good idea to reset  :haha:

You could connect to a wired port to see the settings, but you would still need to know the password.

So what we have left is the slow speeds, have you tried the vista tcp registry setting we have here ? There prety good, and many people ahve seen significant increases in there speeds by using it,  it's located here >>>>>>> http://www.testmy.net/t-18907.msg214387#msg214387

If you have any issues with the instructions, no problem , post up :)  Make sure to restart the machine afterwards to make sure the settings are saved properly.

Unfortunately, I have already tried those and no dice. No matter what I seem to do, I can't get my d/l speeds up above 80-ish KB/s. It's driving me nuts! One thing I found odd though, is that my Steam client seems to work fine. I downloaded Spore and Empire: Total War last night at a steady 200-400 KB/s.

I am just going to throw this out there, since you don't always know how safe the security was on the repair. But it's been a while since I have read a story on a repair depots adding of scumwares to customers computers. So I guess thats good, right?

Free MalWareBytes. Download, install, update and run.

But do your speeds stay in one speed range or do they differ by large amounts?

I guess you have already tried to do a windows update to look for new wireless drivers? I know Windows Drivers are Taboo, but some are actually decent for temporary, as you can always Roll Back the driver.

Or gone hunting for them online at the makers site.

Alright...I have a rather odd situation now lol. So, I remembered that I had another wireless card laying around my room and remembered that before I had the computer repaired, I had it installed. Now, oddly enough, I have both cards in my system, both being active...and my speeds have shot up to almost 600 KB/s! Knock on wood...but I have no idea how this is possible!
