Sounds to me like the typical XP corrupted winsock. A common problem these days on this OS. It is caused by many issues ranging from incompatible software to an incomplete or bad install. Some firewall installs are reported to be at fault as well.

Try this winsock fix, it has worked for me on a few machines at work:

Good call many times ppl have a winsock issue and are not aware of it, it can be tricky to ID,there are a couple of good fixes on the net as you pointed out.... applaud.....Oh sorry we dont use them anymore....L0L but really thats nice of you to point that out.... :) I have also used and like trhis one the best....plus its very easy to use..
