Windows 7 to Windows XP WIRED LAN

Hey guys, been away for a while bcoz of my studies. So its pretty cool to be back! Of course, I'm still using my Smart Bro connection.

I have one question, how can I establish a WIRED LAN CONNECTION between my desktop that uses Windows 7 and Laptop that utilizes Windows XP? I plan to use this for file sharing between the two. Sure there's youtube and other sites to search for this but i haven't found anything comprehensible..

The connection I want to make is a direct cross-over UTP connection, meaning, no router, hub or other networking devices, just cable connected to the computers NIC, because its for only two platforms.. ^--- is this even possible?  :idiot2:

If so, what are the TCP/IP config will I set?

Sorry to be so technical about my question but i can't think of any other way to state my point..

Hope someone can help!

:smitten:

You could probably do a direct connection, but for the price of routers now, it's just as easy to use one.  I've seen for port routers for $20 or less, some even come with a patch cord.  If your two machines are close together a couple of 7' or 15' cords at $2 or so will handle it.  The machines will basically set themselves up with the Network Wizard.

I think you still need a crossover cable for direct connections, but some PCs can detect and correct for that.

With a small network, you could add a separate network HDD to do all your storage.

As long as the last set of numbers in the IP address are different and the subnet are the same ther should be no problems with the crossover.  Example: Computer A:192.168.1.10 Computer B:192.168.1.20

If Computer A is connected to to a network already it would be better to have a router or a 4-5 port switch.
