:grin2: , I am still om Xp Pro , but due to a deal with a local charity shop ,. I am running extended desk top with 2 TLF monitors ,

over here in the UK talk of Win 8 for 2011 ? ,anyone got any info ? ,

I guess for me if it's true , maybe by 2014 ,(if I live that long ) I could move on ,

I see Apple Mac as to expencieve , Linux and all it's versions as wanabe windows :D

cloud as just a cloud that floats by , ( maybe I just don't trust the internet for my personal stuff )

nothing beats a second hard drive IMO,

anyone got any views on the way ahead ? ,

@$900 USD in the UK , :tickedoff: , Although I am sure they are great , I only know one mac user in the UK , ( at work ) she say's it's very good for graphic stuff ? ,

But with Christmas comming up who knows ? ,

my last build cost $450 USD , (Tower unit ) I always build with last years must have ,( Cheapskate )

it's a AMD 3 core , running XP Pro I got Christmas 2002 , I rekon Santa's got Alzheimer's , he ain't been back since ,

Ubantu ? , I tried Linux Mint but never got it online , and gave up early I guess ,

as Tommie says , it does what I need , and Xp supports all my old printers etc , (cheap ink ) , my latest Cannon all in one costs $60 for ink

my old Epson costs $15 and has twice the print run ,and good enough for letters etc ,

I never saw the "Xp no support" as being an issue , I got puters running win 95 ,

security ? , there are pleanty of 3 rd party app's that seem to cover that ,

:grin2: I just talked myselfe into staying with XP :grin2: :grin2: ,but then I was running Win M.e before that , never had a problem ,and indeed I nearly switched back after istalling XP ,

BTW I got an old Junior school report that says Roco don't take change easy , maybe it was right ? :grin2:

Yeah, I had a feeling that they charged more outside the US. Lame.

Damn, Windows ME?!! I haven't seen that first hand in over 10 years. I can't believe that you didn't have problems with it... you must have been the only one. :2funny:

Ubuntu is awesome, I've built a bunch of Ubuntu machines... they run great. And if you're already running Linux the transition should be smooth. They just released a new version Oct. Get it here.

What is the newegg equivalent in the UK?

not sure we have a equivalent to newegg , I use http://www.dabs.com/ , I note the Mini Mac is $1006 USD , :icon_pale:

to put prices into perspective wages in the UK are around 10% lower than in America , and our taxation is higher ,

( Petrol around $8 USD a gallon etc )

the UK is very much a Make do and Mend society , and I guess the reason this latest recession isn't hurting that much ?

I will give Ubantu a try on a spare computer , thanks for the link ,

BTW, just to add I have downloaded Ubuntu 10 10 , along with infrarecorder , and burned a disk , ( nero 8 failed ,making 3 coasters :knuppel2: )

ran 10 10 from disk , it looks good , soon as I get some time I will install it on a spare computer ,

it could be my O/s of choice , and save me from loading questionable o/s's suplied by friends , ( I seem to be the only one with a legitimate

Xp.Pro :wink2: )

also many thanks Ca3le for the link leading to Infrarecorder,

Best regards from your UK news anchor

I'd say stick with whats paid for as long as it is fast enough for needs. B) Why make China richer anyway? :azn:

I think windows 8 is gonna be one tough sale. They got it close to right with windows 7, Xp is still the go to system. Think Many will always keep a copy of that around. Think many will let the ol Cloud pass them by.

I fully agree, Cloud ? , far to dependant on internet connection , especial in the UK , where 2Mb is the norm ,

I guess 8 would sell if the price was right , I recall Xp being around $400 USD , Win 7 is down to $ 250 USD in UK ,

my reason apart from UK cost for staying with X.p , is hardware related , ( old scanners and printers etc )

BTW , I just loaded an old box ( 1.7Ghz ) with Ubuntu 10 10 , it's early days , but so far it looks promising ,

apart from some driver issues ( no sound etc , ) and the add on's ? , but I need more time before commenting,

Just to wrap up this topic

Roco just got a kick into the 21 century :grin2:

as Computer hardware is twice the price in the UK , I build with last years components , my last new build was Mid 09 ,

using an AMD athlon 3Ghz 3 core , I just discovered it is a AMD phenom 4 core , with one core disabled along with 6mb

L3 cache , now enabled , and running OK apart from a 4 C rise in cpu temp , now at 42 C idle , with a ambient room temp

of 22 C , but stressed it hits 60 C , I just ordered a new heatsink ( running stock fromn the box at the moment )

anyone got any experiance of the http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_43&mID=305

( I just ordered one :grin2: )

Dang, I can remember the days when the CPU had no fan ,and running at 66Mhz , boot time was enough to make a cup of tea and a sandwich ,

now I boot in less tjhan 30 seconds ,

Roco I can remember no fans on the cpu as well, just a simple heat sink about 1/4" deep.

As for the heatsink , if you have a AMD heatsink , not an aftermarket , then it's likely the best solution. The copper in the base makes all the difference in the world. Sure , heatpipes are great, but the quality of the copper is key.

Can you say if you have the oem heatsink ?

Hi Muddy sorry for the late reply , at the moment I don't know Whether I am on my ASS or head ( family stuff )...AGAIN :evil2:

indeed I am using the AMD OEM in the box with the Cpu AMD 3 core 440 ( 3 Ghz ) ,

but since unlocking the 4th core the Temp has risen , by about 2 C at idle , but the new unlocked phenom , hits the alarm point on my M/B (60 C ) while running a stress test

(OCCT ) , yeah I know that is a low set point , but I value my CPU , and another build is 2 years away ,

I have logged running temps on the Oem heatsink , I will post up the result using the artic cooler pro 7 rev 2 ,

Well this is likely just because the extra core running , but I'de check to make sure I wasn't running any unnecessary processes that are eating thread space either.

Of course after a couple years , you may want to think of re lapping the cpu / heatsink. The stuff tends to dry out and become less effective.

Just installed the arctic cooler heat pipe , sure Xp dosn't make the best use of Multi cores ,

but today I fitted the artic cooler pro 7 rev 2 ,(heat pipe )

I have been testing , result = OEM cooler

Idle 34/34, at full cpu usage , +60 c Alarm point on my M/B after 2 mins

the Arctic cooler heat pipe

idle 25 /22 ,.at full cpu usage 42/40 , at that point the Temp maxed out after 10 mins of testing , ..

BTW the ambient was for both tests 12 C ,

the interesting point for me was the added bonus of the 40% in cpu fan speed , I just like queit computers ,

BTW , my ambient Temp , 12 C = 53.7 F , for both tests , I had doors open and it's zero .C or 32 F in the UK ,

and we got snow in Nov, first time I can remember , normaly not due to end of Jan ,

 Doors open ? . I just been fitting thermal insulation to my roof space , never needed that before ,

But hell, I got a socialist Goverment grant , it cost me in total $45 USD for DIY ,

,

Dam another 5 years and I could have got it for free ,( age related ) ,

But was it free ? I paid enough taxes over the years,

I figure just getting some of it back ,
