VinceEdwards Posted June 2, 2011 CID Share Posted June 2, 2011 Hi, I have posted here before, but over a year ago. Since then I have been on Virgin Media 200Mb and 400Mb trial. That was totally cool with awesome speed. I am now back on my regular 50Mb/5mb connection with Virgin Media. Very soon I am upgrading to 100Mb/10Mb with VM. Here I am using a local UK server for my speed test.. Testmy.net is too distant to get reliable results from Birmingham, England. CA3LE Posted June 2, 2011 CID Share Posted June 2, 2011 Not yet. Although I do hope to have a server on every continent in the near future. I believe with my formula that I could accurately test the entire planet with 6 or 7 well placed servers (although, I believe in the future as the internet improves, only one server will be necessary). But the way that I do things setup isn't cheap, so I have to bring them online slowly. When I do something, I try to do it right the first time. I have allot of research to do about UK internet and how your internet backbones run before I can pick a perfect location for my server there. Meanwhile it might be worth your while checking out a company called NAMESCO which itself runs a server for speedtests of 100Mbps+. Branson it sure beats the ass out of the UK average of 4 Mbps on copper ,but sigh , fibre isn't an option for everybody the UK , or affordable , both counts for me, . My connection with VM currently costs me just under £30 monthly taking into account bundle discounts etc. (VM do cable TV, landine and mobile too) 100Bb/10Mb would cost £38 approx. Fibre to the Cabinet is rolling out across the UK with Britisish Telecom and VM. VM have plans to run fibre out to rural areas using the telegraph pole network, as is done in S. Korea. You are right about copper over here, but hopefully this will become less important over time. CA3LE You might find this link to a UK forum thread useful for your server hunt. TriRan Posted June 12, 2011 CID Share Posted June 12, 2011 CA3LE are you looking for a company that rents out dedicated servers, or are you looking for a place you could colo a server of your own? because a quick search has brought up a few places that offer 1000Mbps links but i just wanted a little clarification before i look further edit: so far i've found a couple of options, lol unmetered 1Gbit isn't cheap let me tell you lol http://www.eukhost.com/ is offering umetered 1Gbps at £2999/month http://www.seedboxsales.co.uk is offering unmetered 1Gbps at £165/month and they even have 10Gbps starting at £800/month not really sure how their network is or what datacenter they are in lol bandwidth seems more expensive in the UK than here at least from what i've seen http://www.webhosting.uk.com/ is only £4000/month for their unmetered 1Gbps oh yeah thats just for the uplink not inlcuding the server hosting costs lol Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have a 100Mb connection with Virgin Media. The max I get here is 32Mb with many tests much lower than that. Remember, to route to Amsterdam you're going to be routed through more providers. So the test here will be a better test of your providers peering. (testing at speedtest.net on the Amsterdam server) That test only took like half a second so they're obviously not testing with enough data to be accurate over there. ... the server is more than capable of testing your connection. Symmetric gigabit. I know that you weren't questioning that but I wanted to make sure that was understood. Also, the test system mirrors what I have running in the United States. You've got some bottleneck in there. I'm curious to see other members scores on that server. On that Virgin Media connection, how often do you see close to 100Mbps in the real world? Over the next few months VM are going to increase the maximum download stream to 110Mb to allow for overheads. At the moment is at 103Mb, hence the actual speed of 97Mb. This is to fit in with UK regulations requiring that users can get what the connection is advertised at. You are no doubt right about the bottle neck. These are results from a variety of NL locations. If you can let me know the address of the NL server I will do a tracert and post it here. Here's a better result from your server today. As you can see the NAMESCO server in London gives me my usual 97Mb. Rotterdam gives me something lower owing to distance I guess, but testmy.net has not done well. Who wants high latency and packet loss, especially if you are a game freak? For those of you interested here is a line quality monitor I have started with Thinkbroadband. This is live so it will change over time. I am pretty pleased with my line quality. Any spikes you see are due to my internet activity. The rest of the time all the graphs flat line. BTW My connection is going up to 120Mb soon. Virgin Media are upgrading all UK cusomers for free. Most will be double speed, but those already on 100Mb will only be raised to 120Mb.
