Optimization Software Suggestions

Dude. I have always respected your service and told many people of its superiority to those more well known speed tests sites. But today your site suggested I download MacKeeper. McKeeper is garbage and consider malware by many and nearly impossible to remove from your machine. Not to mention expensive and offering nothing more than freeware offers. I understand your need to run a business and make money, but promoting this software sends a bad message.

Hi Jack,

First, thanks for telling people about my site... I appreciate your respect and kind words.

Yes, I do have a business to run... but it's more important to me that my users are happy that the revenue I generate.  Before I allow advertising like that I test the software to make sure that it can easily be removed and that it's not invasive. ... maybe I need to reinstall and test it again.

I have never had a negative complaint submitted about Mackeeper. If you can point me to complaints from people and I find that it's not a good thing for my users... I will remove them.

I personally wouldn't use the software because I know my way around computers very well.  But someone that wants to clean up their computer who doesn't know this stuff can get help from that program.  The tab on the results page that talks about it clearly outlines all of the capabilities that they offer. People can trial the software and if it's not something they want it's easily uninstalled.  Every few months I download the software myself, as one of my visitors would... it's never seemed to me like malware.  If it did, it wouldn't be on my site. I respect my visitors too much.

I had software for Windows from a company called Uniblue.  Mackeeper isn't like them.  ... I eventually stopped doing business with Uniblue because when I did one of my checkups on their software..... it did things I didn't agree with.  It started right in your face when you booted up and popped up annoyingly every so often.  They also setup their sales page to where it automatically billed people again after a year.  BS!  I immediately cut my ties to them.

I will re-review my software offerings to make sure they haven't changed anything.  If they have and it could negatively effect my users, they'll be gone.  AdSense is about 75% of my revenue anyway, I can drop any of those other guys and it really wouldn't effect my bottom line too much. My visitors are most important to me... I will take action if I don't think they're a good fit anymore.

Valuable feedback, thank you.  Keep visiting and I'll keep building.

- Kind Regards,

Hey Damon.  I spoke in my previous email from readings and word I have heard about this software.  I was surprised to find it offered on one of the most legit sites I utilize (yours).  Maybe I over-reacted.  I still don't think the software is on the complete up and up, but I can tell that you are (on the up and up) and I respect that.  Your response told me that you mean well and there is no harm when you mean well.  None at all.

Whether this software is something someone should use is questionable.  It is not clear cut and maybe I should have just kept my mouth shut.  I did some research and I found a number of articles debating whether the software was a scam, malware, etc.  And many other posts in forums asking how to uninstall it - because it isn't easy to uninstall.   But to me, the mere fact that there are so many articles (see below) debating it's legitimacy leads me to have doubts.  I've heard through my previous experience that people have problems with the software and that it persists in systems even though it was "uninstalled".  I once heard that it reinstalls itself (no idea how) and that is what led me to believe it was a problem.

That being said I am going to leave my opinion to myself and let you run your business and pick your partners.  I know you are a legit person and business owner and mean well. I determined that from your response.  In fact you probably know better about this software than I do because you've installed the it.  I have not.

Good luck and I will continue to praise your site to my colleagues and friends - most of whom now use your site exclusively in our work.

Thanks Damon for your response.

Jack

Mac apps should be as easy as moving to the trash right?

http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/

Hi again Jack,

The people having problems uninstalling probably just don't know how to uninstall programs on Mac in general.  Since I spoke with you last I installed it again myself.  To uninstall I simply deleted it from the program directory.. bam, gone.  I've never seen it come back on its own... if I ever saw that behavior I would cut all ties to them.

If you search Google for "uninstall MacKeeper" the first result should be from MacKeeper's site... giving the simple and standard uninstall procedure.  They make it easy by providing the instructions themselves.

My experience with them has shown me that they are legit.  They don't make any claims that the software doesn't do.  They don't say, for instance, that it will miraculously make your Internet faster... because it doesn't.  What it does do is help people recover wasted space in ways that can be difficult without the software.  Like by removing unnecessary portions of programs (for instance, by removing unused language packs) and clearing system wide cache for individual programs.  I've seen gains as high as 5GB of freed space just from that.  It also helps run routine tasks that can truly make for a snappier computer.

I'm not going to lie, that software isn't for me... but I'm a power user.  You probably are too.  It's not for us but other people do like it and since I put them up in 2009 I haven't had a single complaint.  Not even one.

I do a lot of research on companies like them before I offer them up to my users.  Like I said in my previous email, if I ever catch wind of something shady... I get rid of them.  The company who's software I sold years ago started this auto billing subscription bullshit... the day I noticed they were GONE and I only responded to their email once to tell them why.  They violated my trust and my users.

I'm highly ethical, probably the most ethical webmaster you'll ever meet.  I'm truly out to help people not for monetary gain.  Obviously I need to make money to support myself and my family and pay my HIGH hosting expenses... but realize, when I started TestMy.net there wasn't hardly any way to make money on the Internet.  Making money off it didn't even cross my mind until I couldn't aford to host it anymore.  The only ads available when I first started this were flashy, scummy casino and porn ads.  I didn't even monetize the site AT ALL until 2003.  7 years after I started building.  I had to shut it down for a couple years because I couldn't afford the extreme expense.  I wasn't going to compromise my morals so I had to wait for the cost of bandwidth to go down.  It still was two more years after I relaunched before I made a dime.  It's never been about revenue for me... my goal is to have as many people as possible see my creation.  It's an amazing feeling for me knowing that countless millions have seen my labor of love... money is just a comfortable side effect.

Please keep sharing my resource and I'll keep working my ass off around the clock to make it better for you and your friends.  I'll also keep checking in on my software offerings to make sure that I'm not referring people to something that will hurt rather than help them.  Last thing I want is for people to get a negative image of me because of someone else's bad practices.

Cheers,
- Damon Mueller - TestMy.net
