Upload Test

I'm currently rewriting the upload speed test, although it's accurate for most people it is displaying results that are too low for some.

I have no time estimate on this, but I would imagine it wouldn't take me more than a week to fix this.  This error comes after updating some of the servers core software, sometimes updates like that require some minor adjustments to scripts.

Alrighty, issue appears to NOT be an issue with my end.  Although I still need to revisit my scripting because there is an issue with Firefox.

It seems to me that firefox has upload speed limitations for the protocol (not really a protocol but that's closest word I could think of) I use for the upload test.  IE is accurate all the way to my cap of 122  kB/s (1Mbps).  Firefox fails at 75 kB/s (614 Kbps)  -- I have to now figure out a work around (if one even exists without resorting to lame JAVA Applet).

For now... if your line is over 75 kB/s or 614 Kbps test with IE ~~

as you will see in the attachments testmy.net is VERY accurate for upload speed.  Though I don't have a line over 1Mbps upload to test from so development above that is very hard unless I take one of the servers down and limit connectivity to check various line speeds (remotely... I imagine that's very hard in RHE Linux)

The screenshots below will show you the slue of tests I ran through.  I used NetLimiter to control how fast my machine uploaded so I could test the various speeds with high accuracy.  You can figure that the NetLimiter program may be +-1kB/s so for the results that are off by 1kB... consider those 100% accurate.

I tested at 24kB/s - 48kB/s - 64kB/s - 80kB/s - 96kB/s - 128kB/s  --  Internet Explorer passed all tests but as I said before Firefox Failed at 75kB/s (seeming to stick at 75kB/s... which leads me to believe FF has some sort of internal limit... I have lots of research to do ;-))  ---

Now for the weirdest part... when disabling the NetLimiter I run into another problem, connection drops to 60kB/s, after re-enabling (setting at 128kB/s) it's accurate again!??!?!

I will keep you guys posted ;-)

i changed browser."cache.memory.capacity" in FF, seems to get me more stable upload results, but im still stuck at around 1,5 to 1,6 Mbps

in adress bar type about:config

make a new value

name it browser.cache.memory.capacity

i have set that to 64000

Ahh, VanBuren you must have put on your smart hat this morning.

If the browser will only cache so much, then it can't be accurate.

My FF has this option (attachment), is this what you are talking about?:

as you probl understand its hard to cache a file for uploading

Firefox is allocated 4096 KB of memory by default and in this configuration i changed it to 64000

just let me know how you think that would make the test inaccurate, the server still downloading the file from you..

edit: btw the parameter you refering to is not the same as browser.cache.memory.capacity

Well, when the browser is downloading the data from TestMy.Net that is to be up-loaded, where does it cache that?

Is that a browser setting, or does CA3LE's coding determine where that data that is to be uploaded is stored?

the data is dl to your hard drive, where its saved i dont know

I see.

So the setting you are referring to probably just determines how much of that stored data can be cached in the browser at a given time.

something like that, the parameter determ how much memory thats allocated by FF, a application buffer

Edit: I found this after some searching

quote from http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_8.html

"browser.cache.memory.capacity [integer] (32768) - This setting determines whether Firefox uses system RAM to cache itself, improving performance. A value of 0 turns off caching into RAM (not recommended), while a value of -1 tells Firefox to automatically determine the amount of RAM to use. I suggest you manually specify the amount of RAM to be used (in bytes) to prevent Firefox from blowing out too much. For example, I recommend a value of 32768 (32MB) for systems with 512MB of RAM or more. For those with less RAM, try a value of 16384 (16MB). If you have any problems, set this value to -1."

Used to be able to get almost 1000 Kbps (out of 1024) upload from testmy.net  with Firefox. See my old records for that. Now that my dad is using BT 24/7 that's simply over. If I'm lucky Iget 25 KB/s. :angry5:

I think the issue is just a wrong Firefox configuration.

I think I'm going to run a poll pretty soon to see how many of our users are getting the correct results with the upload test... I wish I could physically sit at a computer that it getting the correct speeds to see what the deal is, right now this is very hard to diagnose.

Alright... now I'm scratching my head.

I un-installed a few things on my machine and now in IE I test perfect... still no luck in firefox (still getting about 75-77 kB/s)

Main thing I was doing was un-installing McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (to see if that may have been the problem on my own machine... because we already know that this isn't happening on all machines).  Well I uninstalled and tested and sure enough it tested perfect.  But then again I hadn't tested the upload test in IE before the uninstall today. (my bad.. now I don't have a control test). ---

Okay, so I got all excited... "well it must be the virus scan messing it up" - so I tested a few more times and also tested in FireFox.  FireFox tested bad still.  So I re-installed the McAfee and retested... in IE I still got perfect results, so I restarted the browser... still got perfect results, so I rebooted... still got perfect results.  Now my mistake was that I uninstalled a few other programs (hell I was in there and noticed a few programs I didn't need anymore) so as far as I know it could have been one of those programs being uninstalled that fixed it... AHHHHH.

Well, it now works great for me as long as I use Internet Explorer so I have added a little note to the upload test page stating that connections over 512 Kbps should use IE for the time being.

Keep in mind guys that I haven't given up, I do plan on rewriting the upload speed test to be accurate no matter what browser you use... I just need to figure out a method to do it without using ActiveX, plug-ins or Java Applets... when a user tests here (as I have stated from day one at this site) I want them to be able to test without having to download anything... I want someone with a 'stock' browser on a cleanly formatted machine to be able to test without hassle... doing it this way isn't easy.

here are my notes from my tests

Great news is that the upload test is still highly accurate when you use IE (although I still have no idea why I wasn't getting the correct speeds before) --- now there is a very, very, very small chance that McAffe has patched a problem with their program and I happened to only notice after the reinstall because I updated the program with the live update right after the reinstall was done...  but I would still like the test to work correctly in FireFox too ;-)

as always the download speed test is working awesome... I pretty much got that one right the first time ;-)

whens this pull gonna be up dude, admin?

I'll put that poll up fairly soon ~~ I may do one for the download test too and make it public for even non-members to vote and show it on the front page ~~ couple of days max, I have it written down as something I need to do ;-)
