DirecWay is horrible..... plus a question

Those who have followed my ordeal with Direcway for the past 3 years know how horrible their tech support can really be. I managed to lose 7 hours on tech support the other day because they insisted I upgrade their software - the version they had me download was corrupt ... so, no more satellite... then I dialed up.. and got another version - which despite its name and id number, was actually a 2 year old version of the software..... finally I ended up having to do a very risky System Rollback.. because of it.

So, I'm still getting magnificent speeds of 4 - 148kbps.... but I have a question.....

A level one tech support guy had me run a a TestMy speed test. I got something like this...

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 141 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)

Download Speed is:: 17 KB/sec

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 3 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 60.24 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=55TT5T1YV

The only difference was the it had a higher "connection" speed... like 985kbps or such.... he insisted that that was my browsing speed ... even though I pointed out to him that it took 28-34 seconds to load the Google home page - about 6kb worth of file.

Now, who is right here.... Professional Tech Support Dude, or me?

Thanks

I just got off the telephone with a tech CSR from DirecWAY. After being rushed through web pages and constantly reminding the CSR that I am calling due to poor internet speeds, we finally made it to TestMy.net. Hey guess what, I downloaded at 3kpbs, with total speed of 24kbps! Although the CSR did not mention the guideline on the lower portion of the screen, I did notice satellite connections should up near 700kbps. I was advised to download some software which would tremendously enhance my browsing speeds from DirecWAY.com. Hooray. Now downloading at 4kpbs with a total speed of 39kbps! Although I don't expect 700kbps at every moment, 39kbps is a bit weak.

Then I asked why I couldn't host my own web page from my own computer. I received conflicting responses. First CSR told me that my modem was not capable of hosting web pages, and I would need to upgrade to the super package, raising my cost from $60/mo to $85/mo, not including the $40/mo I pay until I own the satellite dish in my backyard. The other response was that DirectWAY does not support this feature(the capability of hosting my own web page from my own computer). So, before I try getting a third opinion from the people who are supposed to have answers, does anybody happen to know whether or not I can host my own web page while using DirecWAY as my ISP?

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 35 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 386 KB)

Download Speed is:: 4 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 1 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 256 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=NPTNRVD5J

One times faster than 56k dialup!

That's bullshit. Only if your ISP has put in their Terms of Service, they can disallow it. You need to have a fixed IP, and some upload. Satellite has the disadvantage of very high pings, so it'll never be fast.

I have DirecWay sattelite (White dish 2 way) internet & have great speeds. Here is a test I just did. https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=P1ENNR1MM

You will need to try to work with your tec support (as hard as it is) I know I've done it :x I hate talking to someone who can't speak english well!

But I had bad speeds untill I complained about it. I have also had to adjust my dish myself (There is some good info here

http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/5458

I have also tweaked my sattelite. Here is some more good info http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/satellite#4

This upped my speed by an average of 200 Kbps connection speed & about 20KB/s download. So my point is that DirecWay is a great system with poor tech support. Don't give up on it yet.

Oh, & btw my sister does web hosting on our DirecWay with no probs!

Let me know what happens.

I have direcway, and I consistantly get 150-200 KB/s. You need to tweak your connection: http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/satellite

Unless you are on the pro edition, you are nated. This means that you share your ip address with many other direcway users. Direceway, however, gives you your own IP address when not all of them are being used. This is called being unnated. You will not be able to run a web site or VPN when you are nated, but you will be able to when you are unnated.

When you buy the pro edition, you are raising the level of downloads that you can do before you are affected by the FAP, and you are buying your own static IP.

If you want more information on the Direcway nat, please read the FAQ or PM me/post here for more specific questions.

The pings are terrible because for every packet you send, it has to travel 20,000 miles to the Direcway NOC, and 20,000 miles back to you. Radio signals only travel so fast. Here are some speeds as of right now (SSHed to a Linux box at home, I am currently unnated, so I can access my servers as if I have a real IP):[code:1][[email protected] root]# ping testmy.net

I currently am running 4.2.1.10 I believe. I am using a Windows Server 2003 host and 15 clients (Pretty much all versions of Windows, a UNIX box, and several Linux boxes). I have used Windows XP and Windows 2000 as a host in the past with the same speeds. My average speeds are somewhere around 1500/30, and I will post a speed test when I get to a web browser where I can test here at home.

Here is a download, which went much faster than usual (this is not edited text, and is not my normal download rate)

[code:1][[email protected] root]# wget http://luwigie.com/tests/test16

--08:43:13-- http://luwigie.com/tests/test16

=> `test16'

Connecting to 192.168.0.1:83... connected.

Proxy request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK

Length: 16,777,216 [text/plain]

100%[=================================================================================================================>] 16,777,216 801.42K/s ETA 00:00

08:43:38 (678.12 KB/s) - `test16' saved [16777216/16777216]

[[email protected] root]#[/code:1]

For better proof, here is a screen shot of that download. Again, this is not my normal speed, and I am really impressed with the speed right now. I wish I was home sick, so I could play with it.

homespeed.jpg

edit: (that wget -b is just so it would save the output to a file, so I can see more status about how fast it is downloading, ignore that)

Good luck, and let me know if you need any more information/help.

that is fairly good!! As far as the hosting goes.. You can do it only if your ISP doesnt have terms against it.. Like RTB said.. Most of them do because in the old days everyone was buying a connection and then placing a server on a dedicated line.. by doing this the networks came to a screaming hault... Which is why they put stuff into their terms.. As far as hosting a website on a satelite connection I would not recommend doing this.. the pings are high and that means if you have more than maybe 5 or so users at the same time they are going to suffer... It also depends on the type of site that you are trying to host.. Remember that in hosting Upload is key!

I just don't get your download speeds unless you have a piss poor installation. My only bitch is the upload speed. NOT EVEN ANY BETTER THAN DIAL UP AND MOST OF THE TIME WORSE
