These are my new speeds after getting a new Dell Dimension 4700 PC and making a few tweaks. It took me forever to finally get some improvement but when I did, it was really good. This is for the 4000/384 package.

The upload is pretty slow but my downloads are really fast now. I have not changed plans either, I wonder why the big increase in speed. The old HP PC was around 4.2 Mbps but this is getting near the 6 Mbps without the extra $10.

Confusing downloads: I tested 3 times before this and had really crappy speed all of a sudden, the lowest was about 1.4 Mbps so....

I re-booted the cable modem and router and then my PC and now the result:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 3967 Kbps about 4 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)

Download Speed is:: 484 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1)

Test Time:: Tue Jun 28 10:59:35 PDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 71X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.12 sec

Diagnosis: Looks Great : 10.16 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-EQH6OINBA

Back to around 4 Mbps.....could there be a modem problem?

Test Time:: Tue Jun 28 11:06:54 PDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 31X faster than 56K 1MB download in 4.9 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 47.57 % of your hosts average (comcast.net)

I'm confused now.

Now back to this:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 5524 Kbps about 5.5 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Download Speed is:: 674 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Tue Jun 28 11:10:18 PDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 99X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.52 sec

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 53.4 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-JZTH2N3RQ

This really makes no sense to me whatsoever. Does this mean my cablenut settings are unstable or just an issue with the cable modem?

By the way, how do you pick what size file to download above the 2992? I've just been using the SmarTest.

This is what you should be getting for your package,since this is the most accurate test.But the other test where you have 1.7 Mbits is something to worry about if it happens constantly :)

Yup,Smartest picks the best possible size for your connection,so if you get extreme results like that,it is showing you the burst part of the speed.Thats why with the 13MB test,you have speeds you should be getting,since its a big file,the burst settles down and you get your normal results ;)

Thanks for the info.

Ahh I see, so no worries then really unless these weird 1.XX Mbps downloads keep coming. What do you think maybe the problem?

Well if your cablenut settings are not the best suited for your connection,you could get some weird results,but sometimes those speeds are just flukes :haha:

You should be fine :D

I applied those new settings and re-booted my PC. This is what happened:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 1961 Kbps about 2 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Download Speed is:: 239 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1)

Test Time:: Tue Jun 28 13:54:19 PDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 35X faster than 56K 1MB download in 4.28 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 54.46 % of your hosts average (comcast.net)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-6FKAU8Q4Z

I just don't get it. I empty my temp internet files before each test. I re-boot after each adjustment but seems like a "standard" value does not work.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello Everyone,

                Thanks for the help and replies. I had Comcast come out to check the cable signal and they ended up replacing the cabling in the apartment and I got a new Motorola SB5120 modem.  The speeds seem to be more consistent now, just a little slower for some reason, but nothing as drastic as before with the 1.4-1.7 MB. Now I'm usually in the 3.7-3.9 range.

Thanks again,

Robert
