firewall

I've used ZA since I first got broadband. I agree with Mactron, you have to "train" Zone Alarm, so it knows which programs should always allow internet access, always ask, or not allow access. If you want a highly secure computer, it's worth it.

Definitely some good info in here.  So, you want a hardware firewall, aka a router (near impossible to be hacked when on one).

Top 3 free software firewalls:

ZoneAlarm:  http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Sygate:  http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

Outpost:  http://www.agnitum.com/download/outpost1.html

A software firewall is basically a mediator between your computer and the Internet.  You do have to teach a firewall which programs are to be allowed access to the Internet, which aren't to be allowed, and which are to ask each time they try.

Once you use Sygate for a lot of time, it is going to take up more and more system resources because of all the rules.. I had ZA before and I was fairly satisfied.. Never tried Outpost.. Anyone here know if Outpost is any good and if it takes up little system resources, and if its effective, etc..? (from their own experience with it) :D

raptors892004: I had Sygate & liked it but it just stopped working at least its control screen..I tried everything I could think of to get it to work.DLed installed & uninstalled. It would no longer work.No help from the Sygate site. The point of this is I decided to try Outpost.

Outpost tests as well for blocking ports. It will drive you a little crazy at first asking for what you want to do with sites you visit. But once it settles down it seems to work pretty well.

raptors892004 : I guess I did just say I tried it .Yes I am currently using Outpost.

It tests to block all ports on the sheilds up test.I doesn't have the graphs like the sygate & you can't do backtrace with it .So it lacks some of the bells & whistles. But it is doing what a firewall is for.

One bad thing about it is it works like the pro version for 30 days and then switches to the free one disabling a couple of features including work protection against infection of programs.. Otherwise I'll say its pretty good.. On the site there is a chart with all the features and what is different between the 2 versions of the firewall (paid and free) :)
