is this a good download speed for cable

hey rob

That is good for cable but.......

You need to know what speed your ISP says you have both upstream and downstream.

If you are on a 4000/512 kbps package, you probl need to tweak to get above 90% of your capped speed.

Here you can see the speed of other comcast users

http://www.dslreports.com/archive/comcast.net

If you decide to tweak, follow my tweakguide here

https://testmy.net/forumz/viewtopic.php?t=605

good luck and post a new upload/download score after the tweaks

If you feel the advanced way is hard, i suggest you use Non advanced way in my guide, i have customsettings for 4000 512 kbps package.

Rob,

Welcome to the site....and yes you are posting good speeds, a rule of thumb is if you get 90% of your adverstized speed(what you pay for) then you are doing fine....have fun

112 gigs of hard drive space

Radeon 9800 XT 256mb

its a dell model xps

10/100/1000 intel lan card

:) Have you looked for spy-ware?? It is a constant source of speed loss, there are several freeware programs that will find and remove these scum sucking, bottom feeding, ass-wipes, if your computer is infected:) As swimmer suggested the post that Van Buren has for setting up useful values that will work is very helpful, just remember to have a good copy of your Reg. and test at different times after you make changes. This will give you a better idea of where your at . Let us know and good luck:)

i have to spyware programs already on my comp adware by lavasoft and spybot

i will try van's guide but it kinda looks confusing to me, not very good with messing around with internet related things.

rob,

Both of those are good, have you run them recently (scan) and do you have all the updates with them? Also have you followed the links that Van Buren has on his post , if you test using those links and follow the recommendations and don't notice any difference you may have other issues............ I'm talking about basic things like defrag, and error checking from the "C:" drive, and of course a good old fashioned reset of system and modem.....try these things and post some scores from various times so we can see exactly whats happening.....let us know:)

:) Yeah rob,

It sometimes doesn't really take long for this to happen:) and it can be a speed killer but often its a combination of several little things......go figure...one more reason why I really enjoy this stuff, and often when I cant see the problem someone points out the most obvious thing, that I didn't see or think of,several minds are most often better than one ....especially if its my one......lol

ok i just called up Comcast thier sending a technician out to me by tomorrow

:) rob,

I think Van Buren is correct, one thing to keep in mind is, before you accept from your ISP that the problem is with your equipment make them prove it to you. The Tech that comes to your home will have a laptop with him ,so if it comes to that I would ask him to hook up his computer to prove he will get better scores and let you see a marked increase......When I was in the field it was a common tool we used to prove to ourselves where the problem really was......godd luck and let us know how it turns out please:) Also if I remember correctly you were having very high pings to this site and elsewhere, if thats the case where is the slowdown...... its not written anywhere but I've been told by more than one tech that they want as low a ping time as is possible,.....but anything under 100ms is acceptable(to them anyway) I'm sure you are aware of these things ...so just a reminder, and I always write down my concerns so I can ask tech point by point.....and yes I did this even when I wasn't an old fart.....lol.....good luck:):)

Ok here is the deal with Comcast... NJ has been a problem since they took over.. Chicago was bad for a period until they got all their new equipment up and running.. I am not sure what the Tech will be able to do.. he might install a booster.. but that will not help with the ping speeds.. only lost packets... If that happens it means that you have a hell of a lot of people on your node.. My suggestion would be to have a few ping and tracerts to comcast.net to show him... Also make sure that your computer is clean.. He might not have a computer with him... All of my techs used my computer.. They were subcontractors.. but either way... And remember THEY CAN NOT DO MUCH!! they are just there to find out what the problem is.. so if they dont fix it dont flip out on them...

well a week ago they came because my modem wasn't receiving block sync (dunno if thats the right term) from comcast they found the problem to be that i might have a damged drop (which was never fixed) and the sync signal was coming in way to high so my modem didn't pick it up.

Ok i found out the date that comcast is supposed to come is not today but saturday, which sucks. Thought it was today. Anyways anyone think the slows speeds might be caused by a damaged drop, which i heard last week might be possible from the three comcast guys that came to fix it the first time to get sync. If it is a damaged drop, them the problem could be fixed a lot faster. Thanks for your help guys.

:) rob,

Yes thats very possible its not uncommon for the problem to be fixed without even coming to your home.It can be as simple as a lose connection at some point in the system or anyone of dozens of other things. Something that always suxs about a service call is the problem doesn't usually take that long to fix,its getting time for the guy thats going to fix it.....hang in there whatever it is it typically will be fixed ,we just cant say when, but as a customer its up to you to stay in contact with them until the problem is corrected:)
