Is the task simply to build a PC? what is the budget?

You could go to a local pc graveyard and pick up mobo cpu Hdd and ram I figure that should be cheap.

if your wanting to build a more modern PC pricewatch.com is good place to find slightly older parts that newegg dose'nt carry any more. Have your son read the Mobo manufacturers Faq sheet to learn what's compatable with what. Have him do the research so that he learns the differences between SD, DDR, DDR2 and their various speeds and CPU sockets, FSB speed, and the chipsets that respectively support each CPU and Ram.

one thing to keep in mind:

often buying a box from dell or the like can be cheaper than building a system of the same specs yourself, especially if you get the bundles with monitor printer et al.

also keep in mind the cost for os licenses and productivity software. these are mostly bundled with the cheap boxes, while a homebuilt simply does not have all the rebates that a big name like dell can apply to a box.

if the task it to familiarize him with the enternal components and allow him to work on the pc.. this is the way to go!!!

However, if you are interested in building a machine that will be a starter for him i would point you to tigerdirect's barebones.. most of the systems ship with case, cpu, motherboard, memory, power supply and heatsink.. which leaves hard drive, opticals, and video for you to "customize"  something like this would do the trick http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1456616&CatId=0.. based on the k8t800 motherboard.. you get a 3100+ sempron 754 pin processor, 512mb of ram, a case, keyboard/mouse, heatsink and 425 watt powersupply $240.. That is something that should last for a little while and is upgradeable to the a64s.. <- you are going to have to check which one before you buy.. A64 did ship with the 754 pins in the early days..

But here is my personal fav..

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1487649&CatId=1222

Soyo Black/silver case w/400watt ps

Chaintech 7NJL6 NVIDIA Socket A ATX Motherboard

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Processor

Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Memory

heatsink, keyboard and mouse for $179.00 that is on hell of a bargan.. all name brand components.. add in an 80 gig hard drive and a 9600XT and you have a sweet computer for about $350.. you are still going to need to find a monitor and cd drive..

build 2.

1 from cheap old parts, a box to tinker with.

and buy a decent discount box, to have a decent but affordable system to do the software part of learning and work and play on.

So where do I buy an old one to tinker with. I still want a good one to use. Any sites :?:

Hey The Dog.  I just built a PC.  I would recomend newegg and tigerdirect, their barbones systems are a good place to start.  If that's not for you, they have really good prices on all components.  There's always ebay for parts, too.  Barebones systems are really good for getting started with the base of your PC, then you can customize from there.  I'd start looking at either the CPU or motherboard to build on.  If you're big on Intel or AMD, look at the prices of the models they currently offer, and where their market is heading.  Of course, prices are higher for the newer technology, but the new stuff will be the most supported for future upgrades.  If you're looking at the motherboard, look for the chipsets, CPU socket types, PCI expansion slots, video card sockets, RAM expansion, stuff like that.  It all depends on what you want now, and how much upgrading you want to do in the future.  One thing I would suggest is getting a solid PSU, 400 watt at the least for dependability.

Welcome

As I have been following the topic line there was one question that was'nt answered. Cost how much do you expect to put into your system that you are going to build.

                                          Thanks Fred

So you want to learn about computers by building them, and its gotta be under 400 dollars. What will this be used for, or is a 500MHz CPU alright because you are just playing around with it? You could build a budget PC for under 400 dollars that can easily handle web browsing, word processing, and light gaming like Warcraft. Is this the kinda computer you want to build?
