Increasing RR download speeds

Hi.  I'm new to this site, and have found improvement using cablenut, but I'm hoping someone can give me some more help.

I'm using roadrunner through time warner.  My connection speed itself isn't bad, but the download isn't good at all.  Here's my info:

Connection is:: 1259 Kbps about 1.3 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Download Speed is:: 154 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Fri Aug 5 14:37:53 CDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 22X faster than 56K 1MB download in 6.65 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 31.54 % of your hosts average (rr.com)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-QTS12VK4

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 360 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 22.03 % faster than the average for host (rr.com)

I downloaded the cablenut 7 files, but I'm not sure what my router has as settings off the top of my head.  I'm running windows xp (SP2), McAfee firewall.

Here are my tweaktest results:

That's all I can think of right now.  Thanks!

Could this be an issue with my router?  I have a generic compusa router/4 port switch.  Obviously I'm not a big tech guru.  Thanks for any help you can give.

You don't need both your router and Mcafee, there will be some conflicting there.  I back up Mcafee onto CD (if you don't already have it) and then remove it from your PC, see if that helps any.  Also try bypassing the router, as in connecting your PC directly to the modem, then reset the modem and PC and try another speed test...that'll let you know if the router is causing speed loss.

Well, I at least understand how McAfee works, where I don't really know how to work with the router firewall, so it is disabled and shouldn't be involved.

I've tried a couple different settings, but now my speed is slower than when I started.  My registry backup didn't save properly because it couldn't load back up.  So I'm a big confused.  Here's my latest speedtest.

I haven't disconnected my router yet, since this new development bothers me more.  The only real difference I can think of is I use aol, and they have a program to manage your router called port magic.  Before port magic wasn't communicating to the router properly, and that's when I had good speed.  Now it's communicating and my speed is crap.  I don't know if I should uninstall port magic, that seems to take away my connection to the web, but maybe that was just a coincidence.  Anyway, told you I was new :-)

Now I'm more confused than ever and would love to have the 1.3 Mbps speeds back, because I don't know that I'll be able to get near the 3 Mbps speeds since I've tried everything it seems. Grr...computers are a pain.

edit:

I also ran this (http://nitro.ucsc.edu/) diagnostic, and these were the results.

AOL probl trottle your speed then, i suggest you get rid of AOL

This is hilarious!

Ok, I wanted to see how much aol affects my speeds.  I'm not going to change away from aol because I've had the same email since 95 and would like to keep it that way.  However, I do use trillian for all my im needs, so I really just use it for the interface with email...so I'm going to uninstall here in a bit to see how it changes.  However...This is what happened just now.

I signed off and closed aol, then tested my speed.  With trillian running, my speed was about .8M.  So I closed trillian, waited, and my speed dropped to .5M!  I was like, what the hell is that?!  So I signed trillian back on.  My speed jumped up to 1.1 M!  Then I closed aol's Port Magic, and my speed jumped up to 1.3, where it was at it's peak yesterday.  I closed trillian and again it dropped, and when I open it I get more speed.

So does trillian modify the registry when it's open and closed?  Because this seems really wierd!  I mean, it's good, more speed, but odd.

My router is from compUSA and is the bare bones router/4port switch.  Port magic called it an SMR br, which doesn't say that much.  Actually, here's the link for the router.  http://fmi.compusa.com/driver.asp?SKU=313831

Hope that helps.

Also, thanks to everyone again for all the help.  I'm learning quite a bit, and so many things I didn't think about affecting my speed are popping into my head now.  :-)

Hopefully uninstalling aol, running cablenut again, will jump my speed up to normal rr speeds...

Ok, so now aol is uninstalled, I've rerun cablenut with the 5000 384 settings, and it's still only around 1 M.  Trillian no longer appears to be affecting speeds.  I've rerun adaware also.

Lol, this stuff is so confusing...why can't it be simple?  I need tech friends :-)

Well, it's not the modem apparently.  Roadrunner tested and flooded the modem, with and without the router.  It was fine.  Still sitting at around 1 Mbps.  So now I'm at a complete loss.  Do I have a critter living in my computer eating up my bandwidth?  hahaha
