Question on MTU

What  will be my MTU if I use a WinXP PPPoE connection  that is a direct connection?

if you have windows XP and connect direct to modem your MTU will be 1480

if you have a router between modem and PC, your MTU will be 1492

thats a bug in windows XP

is it part of the tweaks that makes my download  start  at  like  1300kB/s and drops down to 350 kB/s  which is my  download speed

well, the tweaks can work like that if you have problems with connection, it start fast cos you have a big receivebuffer

im no expert in modems, but i belive you can run PPPoE without using a router

A: As of 10/15/01, there is no way known to raise MTU in WinXP from 1480. This issue is seen only by WinXP users who are connecting with the built in PPPoE connection software. If you change to RASPPPoE, or use a router instead, your MTU should then default to 1492. RASPPPoE is popular, free, and less problematic than WinPoet (another choice).

This small difference (12 bytes) in MTU is negligible however, and should cause no concern. Check back from time to time though for a "fix"."
