Getting host in halo 2 has nothing to do with your speed. I had a connection issue one day, so I came here and did an upload test. My upload was so slow it wouldn't even complete the smallest test, after like 5 minutes. But I got host in halo 2, 3 games straight and everyone had full red ping. The games were unplayable.

I host with halo online for pc,, I only have a 8Mb/768k connection and I do fine with 1-8 users,, But the way it works is if you are hosting a game and YOUR upload speed is slow, regardless of how fast you download.. every one else's game is going to suck.. Every button pressed on evry users remote on their computer is sent to YOU as the server,, your computer then processes this and upload it to ALL the users so other characters move on their map... Servers need to have alot of bandwidth and computing power also....

not to mention hosting consistently will get you capped on most cable isp's which will also kill your hosting ability.  cable's ping times arent good for hosting even if you have the speed the pings are worse than dsl and not stable unless its 3 am. lol

Well I'm in Chicago and I have Comcast and for some strange reason when ever I host a room All users that have Comcast service pings are like below 15,,, honest to god.. It shouldn;t matter that we are all customers,, right? But I have seen this like 3 or 4 times,, anyone care to explain?

if they are all close the pings can be low as hell cause your mostly running on there network so latency should be lower.  my friend on the same service as me pings 6 ms when maxxing out my line so its definitly the network helping it out. :)

I dunno what cable is like on East Coast but here in California, my speeds are always above caps and pings are pretty low.  No reason to make cable sound soooo horrible.

i'm not bashing it cause i also have cable but its true and the pings might be ok and they do jump around more than a stable dsl line especally during the day.  dont get me wrong its good but not as stable as some other lines can be.  also my fastest line by far is my cable and it has more upload and download than both my other lines combind but my other lines have way less hops and better pings and they stay like that all year round but the cable gets a little higher during the day.

i disagree cause i'm about 5600 feet from my C-O and have no problems at so you might live further than i do or have older lines but it can be just as fast if not faster than most cable isp's if your close enough.  now if i was under 1500 feet i can get vdsl which offers over 25 mb download and 3 upload but it differs in some area's also.

I thought you had Cable,, so your saying you have VDSL? not bad but still you HAVE TO BE close to the c/o for that speed and it isn't offered to the majority.. Cable speed is boosted up and down,, distance does not matter, but it's up to the companies to offer that kind of speed,, which sorry to say it mine won't give it to us... (Comcast)

i have sdsl, cable and adsl internet services.  the sdsl is the most reliable and never goes down unless i shut it off and every test to almost every site i get the same speeds and pings.  my adsl has great hops and pings are good too but not as stable as the sdsl.  now the cable i have beats both of my sdsl and adsl for download combind which is 30 mb and the upload is 2 mb but it gets higher ping then the dsl and more hops but comes close at night time cause alot of people are offline.

all 3 are great services and i have a hard time picking out the best 1 but they beat each other in different area's so there is no REAL better 1 cause that depends on where you live and what your concept of better means.

here is my cable trace route to here.

Cable is the Shiznit,, Dsl sucks.. not hating on anyones connection though,, but I have had too many problems with D.S.L in the past can anyone else Agree with me?

:haha: :haha:

hardly. while cable is a good way to get high speed to more people, the ping times on dsl especially with a fast path option or the like (an option used by some isps to provide better routing on their net and therefor better pings) are superior to that of cable. in addition, if the isp sets it up correctly, each dslam (dsl access multiplexer) will have enough bandwidth to run all its connections at full speed. the problem with dsl compared to cable is that pots lines are not quite ideal to run high speed data on them, so the range is shorter. but for those that have the choice dsl is usually the better option. (unless like in my case the telco that offers dsl has its cranium so far up its fourth point of contact there is little chance of seeing any kind of daylight that they bork up the dsl completely) but then i guess there is cable companies that do the same.

generally though dsl, if available at the desired speed is a better connection than cable.

^^^ not true abot dsl.

I live less than 4500 feet away from my C.O. If i want i can walk 5 minutes and get there.  So i thought that was good, then i bought a 1.5/768 deal with Cyberonic, I was getting under a meg everytime and my upload was always 600Kbps or under.  I would love to get speakeasy but they just dont offer me anything besides T1's and Sdsl.  I would get Bellsouth but their highes package is 3/384 and they plan on doing 6/512 soon, but thats still not enough when Comcast has 8/768 and upgrading to 10/1 sometime in Janurary.

thats all you get with over 1000 feet less than me? you should be higher and hit atleast 1400 down out of 1500 and if you saw your distance on dsl reports its wrong and hasnt been updated in a while so the only accurate way is to call your isp and they can tell you.  i'm 5,687 feet according them
