Cablenut Screwed my speed :(

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been having some problems with my speed but i had it fixed by swapping out modem but my computer using the wireless connection was still getting no more than 4 megs and the computer wired to the router was getting 6.5 minimum. I tried the cable nut tweak settings on my computer thats on the wireless connection now i have constant pauses my download speed has dropped by 2megs or more...I was wondering what i could have done wrong?

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 959 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)

Download Speed is:: 117 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2)

Test Time:: Tue Sep 20 2005 20:57:11 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)

Bottom Line:: 17X faster than 56K 1MB download in 8.75 sec

Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 22.33 % of your hosts average (comcast.net)

I used the Cable 6000 x 384 CSS file, which is what my connection is

it didnt mess it up its totally fixable its just that that setting was set for certain ping (latency) than your line is so you get different speeds.  i also did that myself in the beginning and fixed it by changing GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize and TcpWindowSize to more or less numbers.  make them both higher if you have a higher pings (latency)  to web sites and make them lower if your pings (latency) are lower to web sites.

download a big file from anywhere that might max out your download and then do a trace route to testmy.net and tell me you average and max ping times

i hope you arent serious.... pings do change you know

yes i know they change and when i setup my cablenut i try to set it up for the websites i visit and i put them in a program and it pings them all and i average out the ping times and use http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php to make my file.  also those 2 options i mentioned ( GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize and TcpWindowSize ) seems to be the setting for latency cause when i make it smaller or larger those 2 numbers change.

what were you trying to say to me Elite.Pete

agentbob00 try this

Hey just wondering is your NIC set to 10 Full duplex, 100 full duplex, autosense, what?  IF you have it set to 100 full duplex set it back to 10 full duplex and reboot and this might fix your download test hangs.

Thanks,

Compuworm

P.S.  I know you are a noob and really so am I but you shouldn't make blanket statements about a program like Cablenut that has helped so many others.  It is well known this is a great program and has been nothing but a pure benefit to others.  Rather, you should have just stated your problems and asked for help rather than blacken the name of a good program.  The most likely scenario is that YOU screwed up your speed.

Blunted : Have you tried 64240 as the setting for these ( GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize and TcpWindowSize ).I think thats about the max you can use based on MSS below 65335.I believe 65335 is where scaling kicks in so you have to stay below this unless you use 128480 to get the same result with a scale 2 & keep doubling for futher scaling.Anyway not suggesting your settings aren't working I was just curious.

compuworm, Yes i am a nub when it comes to this but i followed VanBuren's instructions to the letter and I ran the program and my speed dropped from 4 megs to 1. I do realize that it has helped a lot of people, and im not bashing it i just want some help to figure out what i did wrong to make cablenut screw my speed. As for the mode my NIC is set in, i have no idea, dont see the option for switching the duplex when looking at it....its a wireless card, not sure if that changes anything.

I have applied your settings Blunted and it has come back to 4 meg, once again the computer directly connected to the router is running at 6-7megs still.

Cholla, should i try your settings along with what Blunted has?
