Terayon Modems

Recommended Posts

Anyone else having troubles with these modems? This is about Comcast hands out here..getting a Surfboard is not possible from what I can tell. This is a TJ715X

I cant get to the stat page but for a few minutes after I freeze it in the freezer..which I have to do to keep it online even for a small amount of time. After contacting tech support it was concluded that this modem has taken a dump!

Their service people cant schedule a truck roll for anyform of diagnostics until the middle of this coming week at the earliest.

Looks like I need to take a day off from work and make a trip to their local office(30 miles south)and atleast get this box switched.

I am using a Terayon TJ715X without any problems.

Strange thing here..This one has worked pretty much flawless for over a year now.The one it replaced was a COM21 which I got back in the @home days. Everyone said its lifespan was less than a year at best but it lasted about 3. When it failed it had exactly the same symptoms. You would first suspect a high line voltage or poor ventilation but its on an APV regulated UPS which gives 121.5VAC constantly and is out in the open for air to circulate.

Dont know maybe I work em too hard

I've been using a TJ715X for the past year and a half and never had any problems. If you don't have this you probably might want it, if it doesn't work, power cycle your modem.

Thanks for the tips! Only time I am able to access any of the stat pages is maybe for 10 minutes after a cold reboot. Even if the thing is halfway working if I type in http://192.168.100.1/diagnostic_page.html all is get is a server not found page. Seems like the embedded web server function ceases to live after being on for awhile. Oddly enough it has stayed on this time for over an hour ...but still cant access the diag page.

Thanks!

W Thomas, you said that Comcast only offers a Terayon modem in your area?

Do you own the modem, or lease it.

Just curious, the whole point of the Docsis protocol is interoperability, giving a customer choices and getting away from the old proprietary systems.

I have heard of a couple system that only let their customers lease modems from them.

At one time here there was an abundance of RCA (Thomson) modems, then along came the SA Webstars and then the Terayons. I do lease it from Comcast although I have considered(a lot of late) going to Office Depot,Best Buy or the like and purchasing a Surfboard.

I agree with the DOCSIS protocol in terms of interoperability also but evidently they issue what they get the bset deal on or have the most of providing it's friendly in terms to their CMTS and infrastructure.

I have a friend who has gone through several RCA's before getting a SA that has lasted.

Updated info. Finally managed to get someone out. After much discussion they decided signals were "perfect" absolutely no room for improvement. They determined the account was misconfigured only and the modem was fine..Dont explain how being powered down for a period of time gets me a little online time.

Its worked for a few hours now but the signals reported by the modem are not much different from before.

Tx Power 53.0 dBmV

Rx Power 5.8 dBmV

Downstream SNR 35.4 dB

Tx Frequency 30992000 Hz

Rx Frequency 645000000 Hz

Unfortunately I cant locate the screen dump from before but the major differences were rx level being at 11dBmV and the SNR being 32 Db.

Guess time will tell..

Thanks for all the replies!    :confused1:

  • 1 month later...

they say they wont replace it? that's bullsh!t i'd call in and say im exchanging this modem or im getting another isp, trust me they will let you return it, and as far as i know if you show up at a service center with a copy of a bill and the hardware + power cord they will give you a new modem on the spot, i've been threw about 5 modems with comcast they never gave me a problem about returning any if you're paying the 3.00 a month rental charge they have to exchange it

I haven't pressured them much about the replacement...yet. Since they are closed by the time I get off work and can get there I have let it ride so to speak.

I'll have to send wifey at that "special" time of the month..she'll likely get an extra or two :evil6:

When I notice a slowdown I find the diagnostics page cant be loaded(server error) then if I reset it that returns and so does the speeds.

Strange little box :-|

fuck they should give you a brand new one for all the trouble you've been going through putting your modem in the freezer isnt really gonna help, but cool it down. and it seems that maybe doing this caused the problem?, or did this happen b4 ?, anyways anything electrical by water = disaster. do it if you want lol but dont do it to your next one. plz. LOLZ
