ArcticWolf Posted October 6, 2005 CID Share Posted October 6, 2005 I got a home netowrking kit from my isp, everything is fine with it, but it's not acting like a router it is acting like a hub..... basically I can say is that it's a dsl modem and router in one made by speedstream model 6520... the reason I say it is acting like a hub is because if I do a speed test all by myself I get 2.5 megs download and if my wife does the test she gets 2.5 megs download. But if we both run the test at the same time... she will get 1.5 and I get 1.5 .... which is not right for a router at all. Can anyone tell me what is wrong please? Routers just share your connection.. If both computers browse the net or download at the same time, the conection speed is going to go down for sure.. I thought a router gave both connections 3 megs a piece, a hub is what splits a line. Because when I had cable internet with a seperate Dlink router we would both hit cap on download ...the cable service was 5.1megs download and we would both hit 5.1megs on the download at the same time. Nope, a hub or router just routes the traffic on your lan. Think of it as a hose connected to a "splitter". You have the hose connected to a main water source at 3PSI for example. Then you have a connector with 2 hoses connected to it. You turn just one on and you get the full 3PSI. Turn the second one on at the same time and it drops to 1.5PSI. 3PSI / 2 = 1.5 each. You can probably go in the router and setup QoS (quality of service) so that one computer can get a faster connection than the other. If you wanted to do that, that is.
